Clutch failure Mk1 Leon TDI FR

exactly what I thought too...
I've asked them just to rebuild it and then will hopefully be able to get hold of the parts myself - the dealer has told me that the flywheel will only crack from extreme heat and that's been caused "obviously" by my style of driving...

i'm dubious.

the parts are being sent back to SEAT for a "review", saw them today, some blue patches on the flywheel and clutch plate and some small hairline marks/scratches/cracks in the surface of the flywheel, only around the outside edge on the flywheel, from the edge to 5mm in.

does that help?

Clutch

Hi, I have a Leon Cupra Tdi and had it re-mapped last year, however as i was expecting the clutch is starting to slip when i drive hard.
I know Sachs do an uprated clutch but where is good to get one from and fitting. I have been quoted about £500 for fitting!!

The clutch i have found on the Sachs website is:

SRE Performace Clutch Kit 1 is 669,76 €

SRE Performance Clutch Set + One Mass Flywheel is 1.305,48 €

Is it worth getting the flywheel?

I live near birmingham so need somewhere fairly local to get it done.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Andy

I ordered the Sachs Uprated organic clutch kit from JBS with genuine release bearing for about £520 ish (can't remember exact cost but included a small discount for SCN members).
Got a Sachs OEM DMF from an Ebay shop on 01924 451277 for £235.
You should be able to get fitting for about £150-£200.

Very slightly heavier pedal than the original, but hardly at all. Otherwise, really good.

If you end up paying, try and do a deal with the dealership over labour rates and have them fit the parts as its already in bits - even if you only do the DMF. I think Seat charge over £300 for the DMF - but check with them.

The old DMF was fairly worn but had some limited life left. It had done 75k miles (70k of which are under a remap with a very aggressive clutch plate so I consider it very hard worked).

Is it the clutch thats feeling knotchy or the gear stick? How long ago was the clutch changed and where abouts is the biting point on the clutch?

Okay, well this might help you a little.
I bought my car 11months ago. It's a 2005 PD150. It had 10700Miles on the clock.
2 weeks after i bought it, i noticed the clutch was slipping slightly. Went to Seat as it was under warrenty, and they said that that unless the flywheel was damaged and that caused the clutch to wear un-normaly, or unless the clutch was faulty from factory, then they would not replace under warrenty.

IT's possible the previous owner may of rested his foot on the clutch causing the improper wear on the clutch.

Seat wanted to charge me 400quid just for labour if it turned out they would not do it under warranty.

In total, it would of cost be about £1000 from a dealer.

I'm still driving the car, and am yet to replace the clutch. It's now on 32k, i've done about 20K in 11 months and it's not got any worse.

It's a really tough decision, if you have the part already removed (gearbox) then take it to a Seat dealer to have it inspected.

Good Luck

Well after reading this thread thro, id thought id tell you what happened to my LEON FR TDI,
It started giving me Clutch Slip at around 33k from NEW & i have had this CAR from NEW & iam the only one to drive it, V Carefully i must admit. & still do !
Its now just clocked 43k with 600miles on trip & 90miles still left in the TANK...
Heheee.....
Anyways by the time i deceided to do somthing about mine it had nearly 37k on & it was 9months out of WARRANTY.
But i contacted my Dealer & SEAT Customer Service at the same time with my complaints...
I ended up getting the Clutch & Flywheel Rep & only paid £400 + VAT for a £900+ Job.
The Flywheel was faulty... Clutch Plate was just like new....
Atleast the Dealer was honest enuff.
SEAT had a bit of nudge from me & my Dealer i think aswell.
But they all agreed that Flywheel failure at them Mileages wasnt the norm.

It drives just the same now i have done 5k miles in it since.

Love the car to bits really & the MPG just helps...

So have a word with SEAT themselves even if your out of warranty.
BeCareful if you havnt had all the 10k services done properly coz i had that questioned in some depth.....

Best of Luck.....
