Right then, why should i upgrade my standard ibiza PD130 brakes to 312mm items, are they really that much better and are they worth the £345 its going to cost me for them to be bought and fitted?

Is anybody happy with running a remapped PD130 on standard brakes?

How much are replacement 312mm discs and pads?

My local SEAT garage will fit 4 standard discs and pads and brake fluid change for under £250,
should i spend my hard earned cash on other things??

ARRRR!!! Help me, please!!

Thanks,

Adam

It depends on how much you'd like to stop.

Here comes the science bit...

The standard brakes on the Sport/FR have 288mm diameter discs the TT setup are 312mm diameter. This gives you a total surface area of 65144mm^2 for the 288mm discs and 76453mm^2 for the 312mm discs giving you a difference of 11309mm^2 between the two. Now that might not sound a huge amount, but these things are OE on the 225bhp TTs, so if they'll comfortably bring them to a stop what are they going to do for your Ibiza which probably weighs less and has a lot less power.

From a personal point of view, when I first got them installed on my car without even being bedded in, I was finding myself stopping a couple of metres from the junction with the same pedal pressure. At the end of the day, it's your money and it's up to you how much you value your life, afterall the brakes are one of the most important things that stop you dying in a car.

And as a plus point, they look better behind 17" wheels. :p

BRAKES

I went for the 312mm brakes with Zimmermann Cross drilled discs from Golf turbo. I also put on pagid pads. Now that they are bedded in i can say that they are one of the best mods you can do for an Ibiza. Mine is a standrad sport putting out 141bhp and they are more than adiquate. I know now that ill stop with confidence when the remap happens.

Sounds like a tractor going whooosshh at idle...but when the car is going it sounds as a normal dump valve should. Having said this i can drive hapily without setting it off. No video as my old camera packed in and the new one does record video!!

Why do you ask??

I would say that if you are going down the remap route etc then a brake upgrade are a must! Mine are bedded in nicely now and are much better than the standard ones. When i had them fitted i took BUNNIN out to show him the difference and he nealy went through the windscreen and was gonna put a claim in for whiplash  only joking. If you already have changed from the oe wheels and have enough clearence for either brembo's or Ap or anyother calipers then the choice is up to you as will the cost ( atleast £700+) justify the difference from the TT ones? If you haven't changed your wheels and you want Brembo's then it will be very expensive to get both at the same time. Ignor that last sentance ive just seen the picture in your signature and the stats  . So you have the remap done and the wheels so the choice is yours.

I replaced mine after only doig just under 3k miles but i would either say suspesio or brakes as they are both very important things to change if you have upped the power.

if i lower the car, its probs going to eat through tyres or something, fair enough iv upped the power but i don't hoon about everywhere to warrant having better suspension so i can corner faster and bigger brakes to stop faster, i might spend my money on something that i actually NEED rather than what i WANT???

Still unsure tho!!

It'll eat throughthe tyres anyway, weather its lowered or not, my sidewalls are pretty worn from going around roundabouts fast but yours shouldn't be too bad as they are lower profile than mine hence not as much to lean on the sidewalls. You could always look at an alarm i suppose as that'll lower your insurance if you get a cat 1.

my insurance company doesn't lower my premium by having a CAT 1, i found out on my old fiesta zetec-s, i paid £350 for a toad cat 1, with all sensors and they didn't lower it a penny,

i must admit my toyo proxes aren't looking to good, thats with 5k on them!!!

im looking into cruise control at the moment tho, i change my mind what i want every other day!!

Spaniels the difference betweena set of 4-pots and the TT upgrade is like the difference between night and day, very noticable.

depends on your performance i spos, if you are just remapping then tt upgrade must be ok, but if you are going silly perfromance and regularly attend track days then you need to spend the equal amount on stopping.

I remeber the old days when the RS boys would get an escort up to 220Bhp then the next week post how they wrapped it round a lamp post cos they never upgraded the braking.

trust me they may be expensive, but one of the best mods i have ever done and worth every penny!!!

I forgot to put that in, and your right they are noticably different, hardley any brake fade but evryday, normal driving withthe occasional fast blast the TT are fine but yes, if your gonna do trackdays alot aswell then the brembo's are a must as they are race proven and the TT's are not, they're just ok to do the job onraod.
Lets say agree to dissagree. I am looking at having alot of power (for a diesel) as im looking at uprated turbo's from Allard's which will put power up to 225-230bhp and if the TT are rubbish then, then ill upgrade the pads and disks to cope with it.

I upgraded mine to the 312mm TT setup, and it's money well spent, I can assure you.
