right mate, before u get flamed on here, the search button would DEFINATELY reveal the answer to your first question.
In fact, your leon car manual will also answer your question.

Because I am a nice guy, i will answer anyway - the aircon does not operate when the outside temperature is below a set level - usually around 5 degrees or below. (not entirely sure as i dont have my manual with me) In the weather we have at the moment this would explain your problem...

Turbo whistle sounding loud and sometimes quiet? This is bound to be down to circumstance. Road noise varies from road to road, weather and temperature, in fact climate you are in will also affect this in two ways - one of which is probably because your car is running on cooler air (bit of a guess)

the other reason i could think of, could be one time u listen with the window down, the next time u dont :bleh:

HTH mate.

Erratic turbo whistle could be loose connection on N75. Mine was, sometimes boosting properly other times hardly any boost at all. Pushed the connector on properly and things were sweet again.

Don't know what the manual says but mine goes off at 2 deg C. When I get the car out and drive to work the measured temp drops so I've noticed when it goes off.

At the top of the engine cover on the right. Black connector block going into it and a couple of vacum tubes. about 1/2 inch big.
