Cost of going BT and parts needed?

Your downpipe would be all new and full 3" if you had the BT from me, as your existing DP is not reused. Its all new on BT

is that all the way to the tailpipe bill, or welded onto the existing one?

Useless on UK roads, racecar only that thing. I actually think the smaller a/r GT2860RS may be the perfect turbo for UK roads and tracks, fast spool with a decent hit of power. Chase an Impreza down a twisty country road and the last thing you want is lag and slow spool, top end peak power means very little.

starting to sway towards this setup, very much 50/50 on the gt2860rs or gt2871

this statement puts me off slightly from BDMS though:(

In the sense of chasing figures, perhaps not enough for me, but in terms of on the road and plantable power, perhaps it is. In regards to the figures, to change the whole kit again for an extra 40bhp gain and for the expense of at least 3k+ is alot of money.......

just googled the gt2860rs as I was looking for dyno plots and came across this discussion on the vortex forums

I am literally quoting what they have said, this is not my opinion. They are discussing the gt28r, gt28rs and gt2871. This is based on a 225 engine

"the 28r is not much bigger than the ko4 in which you already have. So that really isnt much of a choice since there is no reason to spent money on a turbo that my only get you another 10-20whp max.

The 28rs is a better choice iy you want a nice all around turbo that makes GOOD power and has excelent spool. Most see 20 psi within 3500-4000rpm depending on which turbine housing they get. This turbo has been seen to get anywhere from 290whp all the way up to 360whp (both fwd and higher one has water/meth injection).

The 2871r is probably the BEST choice since it will only take a few hundred rpms later to spool than the rs and will make more power per psi than the rs. If you are willing to give up a few hundred rpm's this turbo should stay in boost all the way to 7500 rpms. If you are concerned about rods then if you get the .63/.64 turbine you can just keep the psi lower around 18 or so and if you get the larger turbin .82/.86 you can run more psi since it spools later and has a more gentle torque curve (TORQUE BREAKS RODS NOT HP)."

I think I remember Bill stating the 2871r with the .86 housing is very laggy, and works so much better with the.64 housing for spool etc

What puts you off? Who really 'needs' 380-400bhp anyway?I've heard quite a few people say the GT2871R is laggy. Not trying to put you off or sway you at all, just trying to apply some logic and common sense. :)

I dont know Rob, its just that aspect in the back of my mind, that is it really a much bigger upgrade in terms of figures over yours or my current setup. I know on the road it will be quite a big difference between the gt2x and gt28** variant, still I cant help it though :)

what housing will you go for on the 28rs, .64 or .86?

2871R with .64 is probably a good combo to go for, crank up the boost once rods are in.

Not sure if I'm going any further at all m8, might just leave it as is, haven't even used the hybrid GT2X in anger or know how much power it's kicking out yet!

mine has seemed to open up a bit more lately and boost is coming in quite hard and holding power well (perhaps too quick to judge) but I am relatively happy with it, now that I am used to it's spool and how it drives, it holds power all the way to the red line:D

seems every little bit of work I do to the engine bay....replacing standard pipes with uprated kit etc, the car is working very well right now (touch wood). I will be writing up a full gt2x review at some point over the weekend:)

My old 2871 was very laggy when compared to my Owens turbo, My turbo starts to pull from 2500:D 1 bar by 3700 and full on by 4200. The 2871 I had was .86 originally and was stupid laggy, Changed to 64 housing and was much better but lost top end power. My 2860 was much better than 2871 (for me) but both don't compare to my new setup :)

Im very happy with the 2860rs .64 on my car. It does hold boost all the way to 7k before it slightly drops off. It is silly fast, but i think thats more from the weigh of the car. We run the 2871r .86 on the race car and the boost does come in fairly early, but on a road car that had the same turbo (large port head) the boost was very late.

If i was you jamie then i would opt for the 2871 .64 for more power if you do rods or the 2860 .84 if you want the car to be slightly more usable. This will be more than enough on your car. Just get a diff fitted before you go any further.

When i finally get around to building my engiine then i will either be putting a 2871r .64 or 3071r .64 on instead of the 2860. I just wonder what I will break on the car next.
