I am on my third set of cv boot covers ( the ones at the wheel hub). Original set went @ 17k, replaced them with the universal boots that push over the joint (using the cone to fit), The replacement set lasted about 8k just seemed to wear through not cut. On another set now. I have fitted Cv boot covers before on numerous cars with no problems. I cant see any reason why they are wearing out. Is this a common problem??

why are you using universal drive shaft boots & not genuine VAG equipment?
Thats probably why they arent lasting

Ok just ordered Genuine Boot covers, Should have done that a long time ago. But I was too lazy to doo all the extra work , Universal rubber boot covers fitted with the cone are much less effort. How big of a deal is it to fit the genuine boots? Do you take off the joint at the hub, If so how ??? I know most of you will say bring it to a stealer. I dont trust them and I have access to a full garage with all the fittings + a 4 post lift. So its DIY for me.

Thanks M8 look like good boots,
Iv tried 2 different sets of universal boots now and both failed. Both looked like they fitted correctly. Im going to try the genuine boots and be done with it hopefully. If i have to strip down the front of the car again i will tear my hair out...

Thanks anyway.

Any info on removing the joints would be greatly appreciated..

simple to remove the cv joint m8, once all items are removed " ball joints/hub if needed you can get away with only removing the track rod end ball joint the loosen the hub carrier from the suspension strut this allows enough sway to get the drive shaft from the hub etc " once off cut the old boot away and clean all the grease away then look into where the shaft goes into the joint for a circlip if its got one most newer cars don't then holding the drive shaft in place simply tap the cv joint off with a soft hammer hitting only the outer bearing carrier, a simple sharp knock should do it
