Earthing points?

Hi all, need some help!

Had a 1600WATT sub for a while now, sitting at the back of the boot. As you know Toledo boots are massive! At the moment it is earthed beside the lock at the front of the boot, it just looks ugly with the earthing cable being pulled that far! Are there any earthing points towards the back of the boot?

(the earth cable is short so cant run it under the carpet to the front)

If not looks like some gaffer tape may be in order!

You're after an earthing point? The whole car is an earthing point! Make one!! :D

Seriously, pick a place where you want the earth to go, drill a hole, get a bolt or something to it, and bolt that cable down. If you're doing it blind, use a wide self tapping bolt and a lock washer.

If you're wanting to get the best out of the sub though, you really should take a clean lead right back to the battery. Attaching the lead to any point in the car means you're introducing a weak point in the system, which is the standard SEAT earth strap back to the battery. And it's the same earth wire everything else uses!

If its a 1600 watt sub, you should give it a dedicated earth. Power cable isn't that expensive, some decent thick gauge stuff will do the trick and you only need a few metres?

Edit: Oh yeah, what was the thinking behind the gaffer tape, I'm not sure what your plans were for that?

Please ignore that :D

Just in the process of making another box to put the sub in so it will fit nicely just being the read-driver side lights. Thanks for the advice though, do need some more cable, also may do what you say and run the earth back to the engine bay :)

Thanks matey!

sounds like over kill to me - if the genuine seat earth strap to the battery is just add a better one or two on my Saxo Vtr i added a pair of 0 guage (9mm) earth straps - one from body to battery and one from engine to battery - the rear Amps where then Earthed to the Seat belt bolts Front floor mounted amp went direct to Battery

I was running a very large system in the saxo

using these

Yep, that's an option. For my setup I just wanted to eliminate any 'unknowns' and give the amp as much 'clean' power as possible. It really does depend on how far you want to go, or usually more importantly how much money you have! :D

It was also going into a Vauxhall Cavalier at the time, and I wasn't convinced the chassis was actually good metal all the way through! ;)
