EGR and coolant

So been having some issues with loss of coolant over the past few months.
Got it recovered once a few weeks ago to the dealer, they checked it out and couldn't find anything.
So last Thursday checked the coolant tank and it was empty again so recovered again to the same dealer.
Now after further testing they've diagnosed that it's the egr valve and associated gaskets and its causing the car to use more coolant than usual.
The bill will be roughly £1200 :(
As I'm outta warranty by 3 months I've put in a claim for goodwill.

Anyone had this problem before and is £1200 what it actually costs for this job.
I didn't think an egr valve would be this much but the dealer said it's the replacing of the associated gaskets that's bringing the price up

bloody hell.
i've recently recently left the seat range after 15 years and moved onto alfa.. no issues at all so far, but did decide to treat the car to a brand new clean EGR valve...
£30 and less than 10 minutes of my time to swap them over.

( i will clean the original out and probably swap them over annually).

a work colleague with a VW golf recently has his EGR valve replaced, the bill was something like £850.. probably a different engine but does seem to indicate its not a cheap job for VAG group cars.
But if the main cost is labour then i'd suggest going to an independant, why pay dealer labour prices and not forget ingdealer priced parts..

Thinking back they might have said egr cooler, as if it was the valve and its gaskets that shouldn't even cost that much.
I remember whipping mine off my old BMW e90 to clean and only took 10 mins to take off so its not hard to do.
I'm not sure where the egr cooler is on these but it must be a difficult job for that price

Just looking at the workshop manual on replacing the EGR valve & cooler on an EA288 motor ( 2.0TDi )

It looks like they need to remove most of the inlet manifold, dpf assy , turbo etc just to get at it.
This will mean dropping the coolant too.

And the egr/cooler assy looks complex so I doubt it will be a cheap part.

Cheers Deano just had a look at the manual which was posted on here think your right, looks like the cost will mainly be labour to sort the egr cooler due to the location :(

Here's hoping seat sort me some goodwill or might ask around some independents, I'll find out next week.

I had my EGR valve replaced only 2 month since. Luckily i had a 1 year warranty as i bought a 63 plate 2.0tdi FR from Seat direct hence i got the manufacturer approved warranty which runs out in May.

I had similar issues as far as my coolant warning light came on. First time i topped it up. Weeks later it dropped again then i knew it was a issue. The coolant also looked contaminated, funny colour ect. I took it into Seat Preston and they had the car for nearly 3 weeks. They couldn't find the issue and basically flushed the system and replaced the reservoir. 5-6 weeks later the coolant warning light came on again.

I had to taker the car back to the dealer for a second time. This time within a day or two they diagnosed it and said it was the EGR valve. They proceeded to replace the valve. The total cost on the invoice was £1300 for both visits. Luckily i didn't pay. It's now 6-7 weeks since and coolant has remained at a good level.

I spoke to a VAG specialist at Chorley Autovolks and he diagnosed the fault before i could even finish my sentence after telling him i had coolant issues. Seems its quite a common fault with the 2.0tdi VW engine.

Hope they fix for you as i think it should never happen on a modern car.

Cheers,
Sam

Autovolks didn't happen to give you a quote for the job while you were chatting to them did they?

Just gauging what Indies would be charging

I've had the same issues as above plus cold heating had the water pump changed and then coolant flushed and 're filled with fresh g13, 1 day later and the heating was back, 2 days later and it's brown and merky again in expansion was going to have the oil cooler changed next so should I just look at a new egr valve or could a delete kit and map it out be cheaper? Is there anyway to test to tell what's broken? Mine a 63 plate 2.0 tdi also!

I'm not sure how to test which component it would be, if you do a pressure leak test and can't find any leak then I'm guessing it's either the egr valve or egr cooler or some sort of head gasket issue worse case scenario.
The dealer diagnosed it for mine.

I have read that if more coolant is being used by the egr components then this gets put out of the exhaust system so check for a clean exhaust or smell of coolant from it, how true this is l, I don't know.

Egr valve should be less than £100 and probably takes less than an hour to change.(edit..this doesn't look like it's on the top part of the engine like usual egr valves in other cars so cost may be more if it's near the egr cooler).
Egr cooler looks like it's between £2-300 brand new and needs removal of quite a few engine parts to get to so adds to the labour cost.

I know you can delete the valve I'm not sure if it takes care of the cooler as well then or if its separate.

£600 for both valve and cooler from memory. The guy is called Fred and his garage is autovolks chorley. Would highly recommend a phone call if you’re stuck really nice guy. Flushing the system and checking for pressure loss can be a timely exercise. These faults are never easy to diagnose it seems hence why you need a very experienced mechanic. Good luck chaps.

I will post in a few weeks if mine keeps behaving. I kept the paperwork for work carried out so I could dig that out and send to anyone who is interested.

Cheers

I've had my head pressure tested and it held all weekend so I don't think it's head which leaves just those 3 options left, I don't have loads of money to throw at it as I'm currently saving for a mortgage with the girlfriend but need it for work :(
