Might whip my EGR off tomorrow when I've got chance and see what condition it's in.... only on 28k so I'm not expecting it to be too bad tbh.

Chris, when the CEL comes on, how do you clear it? or does it do it itself when you remove the blanking plate?

I suppose the other option to all this, is to add an oil catch can to the crankcase breather pipe, to prevent the oil from getting into the inlet tract in the first place......

Many thanks for the replies Chris and Crispdust - that fills in the blanks nicely. No, the fuse hasn't blown but I can just hear the motor on the flap valve whining as it tries to move after switching off the engine. I'm presuming that there's a feedback switch or potentiometer which is telling the engine management that the flap isn't closing as there are 4 wires on the electrical connector and this is triggering the warning light?

I'd forgotten about the engine breather - so that's where all the oil is coming from. I do tend to do a lot of local driving so I'll have to take it for a blast regularly ) . There's even oil coming out of the 2 holes on the side of the EGR valve which makes a bit of a mess.

That also explains about the 4mm/6mm hole in the blanking plate.

I'm ordering a new V157 so I'll fit a blanking plate when I fit the new flap assembly.

Thanks for all the help guys.

most "warning" lights can be cleared with VAG-COM or an ST3 device, however usually disconnecting the battery for 10 mins should be able to have the same effect. if there is a fault however the CEL light will come on again.

John, i would add that my new flap whines when its working... so i believe that noise is ok...
When my flap wasn't working it was popping fuses and also causing the engine to shake itself to bits when you turned the car off.

If you want i can hook my ST3 up to it for you and pull off your fault code so we can check for sure?

    Cheers
    Chris

Thanks for the offer Chris but I got the V157 error from VAGCOM so I guess it is the culprit as I can't see anything else wrong. With the flap valve mechanically disconnected but connected electrically, I turned the ignition on (without starting the engine) then turned if off and the flap didn't move at all - I couldn't think of another way to test it?

I just phoned Euro Car Parts Ltd and they couldn't find the valve - is there more than one Euro Car Parts?

I took my intake flap off the car again to examine the mechanism after the posts and links above.
Here are the pics of what I found when i opened it up:

I then gave everything a thorough clean:

Put it all back together , changed the blown fuse, cleared the code and pop, fuse went again, so guess the elctrical circuit is fubarred. I'll have to get a new flap assembly now if I want to clear the code.
Thing is the car runs superbly at the moment, but I can't help but think my turbo is on borrowed time having that much oil in the inlet tract!

I too wondered about the amount of oil until Crispdust (see earlier post) pointed out that oil from the engine "breather" is deliberately ducted into the inlet air manifold, so it's not necessarily your turbo. How many miles do you have on the clock?

I've still not replace my inlet flap as Euro Car Parts couldn't identify the part (although others have bought from them) and I didn't fancy paying VW's price.

Please let me know how you get on finding a replacement part.

Mine has done 50k. I expected some oil in the inlet, but not how much was actually present in the flap mechanism. I would have thought it would be designed with a seal to prevent ingress of oil.
Probably is, just that mine has had it!

my guess is the manufacturers know there is an issue but say nothing, since you will in time need a new part thus creating revenue for them:)

Holy shite, I'm so glad I have a catch tank. In less than 5k it has collected some 100ml of oil.....

Crispdust, what are the dimensions of the breather pipe ends? I have a Catch Can on order but need to get some pipework and maybe straight reducers. just wondering if you remober what the two sizes were on the breather pipe.

you could route it back onto the bulhead, or over to the drivers side wing next to the washer resevior filling neck or somehow near the oil filter depending on the size of tank.

I had to mount mine under the battery clamp bracket to put it in a place out of the way of any movable parts. Have pictures around here somewhere......

Funnily enough I managed to pick up a low mileage flap assembly and egr valve off ebay last week.
I didn't need the egr, as mine was okay, but put the flap on, changed that blown fuse, cleared the code and its been fine for over a week now, job's a good'un!
If anybody needs an egr valve, give me a shout and I'll see what i can do for you.

use your tooth brush mate

nah seriously a dry rag should do it. if you can strip the internals down.

I've not stripped my old one down yet though it seemed like it was near ceased shut. mpg was on the heavy side last week, but now back to normal. the flap was slightly oily but no build up of dirt though.

you can also tell that is it not working since this flap is the flap to shut off the engine when you turn the key back to the off position. I noticed the engine was noisey when it was failing and ran on about half a second more.

great pics- only just picked up on this- couple of questions- can you change the oilseal on the shaft and is it worth moving the large black intermediate gear round a bit so it "starts" on a different tooth ?
