Engine shaking - engine light came on [PICS]

I've noticed this past week that my car stutters slightly when running from cold (would normally be OK after a minute) - not only that but it sometimes takes longer to turn over.

Less than 6 months ago I had the same symptoms and found the coil pack to be the culprit, when I took it out it looked proper corroded/rusted. Replacing for a new one fixed it immediately. Great...

A few months after this I had more issues with the same coil pack - it had developed a crack and caused an arc burning out part of my wiring loom (all happened whilst in the care of a garage) - so that was replaced along with part of the loom and all was good again.

So here we are again, was driving to work and instantly knew something wasn't quite right. The engine stutters were becoming allot more obvious and I got 3/4 of the way to work and the engine started shaking like crazy and had barely any power, the engine light came on and I just about limped it to work.

I checked all four coil packs, and once again, the SAME cylinder from the previous two incidents was to blame.

The coilpack:

Chamber: (looks like it corroded all the way down???)

I am mainly concerned with the condition of the ignition chamber, it should be clean right? There's definitely something happening within cylinder 1 that keeps causing the coil pack to corrode/rust. I've never had a problem with the other 3.

I'm not sure if this means anything, but removing this particular coil pack was agony! Each time it started to move it was like it was getting sucked back in? The others were a breeze.

Thanks for any help.

The car had brand new spark plugs in its last service in January.

And forgot to mention its a MK2 pre-fl FR TFSI.

The left most chamber on mine (looking at the car from the front) is heavily rusted. I also have a nightmare getting that coil pack out. Trub is with the MK2s is a lot of water gets into the engine bay. Either through the scuttle or from the soundproofing soaking through and dripping in. Add to that the fantastic design where every time you open the bonnet it tips a gallon of water in. So far mine hasn't caused me any issues. Except the rust spreads to the coil pack. I wonder if the rust in yours has just progressed onwards and is effectively causing a short circuit.

Thanks Jon, sounds logical.

Is it worth trying to swab that chamber and give it a good clean out before replacing the coil pack? I'm picking up a replacement today.

Trouble you'll have is, any of the rust you try and remove is going to fall into the chamber. If you do attempt to clean it, leave the spark plug in so at least it'll stop anything falling in while you work out how to get it out. Does your engine have an engine cover? Do you still have the damping material under the bonnet and is it soaked? I think first course of action would be to find out if waters getting in, where from and stop it.

This was my problem, not sure if it's yours also, but might we worth having a read of this thread:

Yeah I have an engine cover. I still have the original damping material on the roof of the bonnet also. I'll go and check to see if its wet as you say.

I'll check that thread, thanks again.

Checked the damping material, its really wet but just on the left side where the suspect chamber is.

I've now replaced the ignition coil but its still acting like a pos. Does the fault need to be cleared so the engine knows that cylinder 1 is working again?

Update.

Ended up taking it to a garage, they ran a diagnostic and found and cylinder 2 to be the issue. Visibly the coil pack looked OK so I found this a bit strange. So I've had a new one installed and its now completely fine!

Looks like the coil pack on cylinder 1 (pictured above) was on its way out anyway so glad I changed that.

I think i just need to investigate why the damping material inside the engine bay is getting soaked on just that one side.
