ESP (ABS) Fault

Hi all, newbie here.

On Monday the ESP light came on on the dash of my TFSi FR. As the car is still under warranty I booked it into the local dealer for today. They have told me that it needs a new ABS control unit - seems a bit serious! Apparently these are on back order from the factory and might take upwards of three weeks! :(

I have seen several posts regarding faulty sensors and blown fuses on Ibizas and Leons causing a similar fault. I'm considering getting a VAG-COM cable ...

Anyone else needed a new ABS unit?

nope. but get a GENUINE ross-tech vag-com or as newly titled VCDS cable and appropriate software license + cable. You can do a LOT with these.... :) recode convenience module to your specs, change 'convenience' locking, coming home or leaving home lights, not to mention the obvious diagnostic capabilities for VAG cars not forgetting the OBD setting that can be used on any car! good system, and no i dont work or ross tech i jst rate them for the price! :)

Yep, mine went too. But acording to some of the guys here. It must have been MY fault as apparently VAG products are SOOOO reliable  I almost believed them until the DSG ECU went wrong too. I've lost faith with Seat to be honest. The car is behaving itself for now, but one more fault and it's goodbye [:@]

Finally fixed (for now)

Thanks for all your replies.

The ABS control unit has now been replaced and the dash light is off (except when switching ESP off ;) ). The dealer was already waiting for another two ABS units to come in - seems like a common fault. Hopefully the replacement units have this fault fixed.

I think that if I still have the Altea when the original 2-year warranty expires (quite likely) I shall have to buy the extended warranty. It's a lot cheaper than a new ABS/ECU etc ...

The actual fault with these units is a pressure sensor inside the ABS hydrolic pump (brake pressure sensor -G201-), when this fault occurs the ABS/TCS system can no longer determine how much pressure has been applied to the brake pedal - thus cannot control the ESP or TCS function correctly.

The repair can be carried out with a hydrolic pump alone but because they come as a single part they have to be fitted together and re-calibrated.

The fault itself is inside the hydrolic pump unit (and is an intergrated senson), not the electronic control unit.

Hello again

One more thing is it dangerous to drive with the faulty abs sensor because the brakes seem fine apart from the light being on .
I will get it checked out but can't afford 1300 pounds to get it sorted at the mo.

Thanks again rob

If it's one of the ABS sensor's at the wheel this is really easy to fix and relatively cheap. The part should be around £30. I did one on my mk3 VR6 recently (one allen bolt and the electrical connection to change so its easy) and I'd be suprised if its any more complicated or expensive on a newer car.

I had the ESP light come on my old Altea due to the pump/ABS ECU and faced with a £1400 bill (though I'd heard that it was possible to negitiate to £500 due to this being a known weakness - even outside of warranty) I upgraded the car which I'd had for 3-years by then anyway.

Hi thanks for the quick response going to book it into the garage next week and see what they say.
Went to blackpool in it last night no problem i live in manchester so i will see what the garage says and if it is ok to drive around still without it i will have to for now 1400 pound a bit rich for me at the moment.
At the end of the day we all used to drive around without ASB, and ESP, so a bit longer for me will not be any trouble.:)

Thanks again for your reply

I have this exact same problem on my 2.0 TDI Leon Sport (06).

Took it to the dealer yesterday and they have quoted me 934+VAT Fitted. They are going to speak to Seat and see 'what they can do'. The frustrating this is that the car is only 3-4 months out of warranty!

Does anyone know of anywhere else that will replace / fix this problem? Can it only be done by the dealer?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Luke

Trust me mate seat uk will pay for a large majority, if not all of the cost - let the dealer do it.

The more you make a big deal of the fact its only just out of warrenty - the better a deal your likely to get.

VW also share the same problem, Tourans more so than others.

But MJ is spot on, brake pressure sensor faulty. Test is really short, as long as the brake switch is working, replace the unit.

Just bought a seat leon and the esp light came on. it is the same problem as above, needs new abs control unit. I have been quoted £900 for the replacement of the unit. My dealer will only pay 50% as there is 1 service missing. The car is only 7 months out of warranty:(.

should i push for more?

Hi All,

Just looking for a bit of advice on the above ESP light fault, my Leon FR is two months out of warranty and I've been quoted £800 by my local dealer for the repair. I've spoken to customer care and was told that my car was not covered by their goodwill policy as I'd not had my servicing done by a main dealer, is this the case or am I being fobbed off? I tried to take the matter further with customer care but was told by a senior member of staff that being this is not a recognised problem that complaining further by writing would not be looked into.

if you've shown no loyalty to seat i.e having your car serviced by a seat dealer then in most cases they are reluctant to help you in any way once your warrenty has ran out.

If your car is regularly maintained by a seat dealer then seat uk may well support a full 4th year of warrenty work carried out on your car but if you've chosen to save a few quid in the short run by having "john smiths independent motors" you've shown the dealer network no loyalty and the "good will" service is refused.

Unfortunate i know, but you wouldnt take a tesco shopping trolly into aldi would you?

Okay then thanks for that. I bought my car from a Toyota main dealer and they serviced it prior to me picking it up, the car had only done 1100 miles the year before. The only time I've had work done on my vehicle it was done by VAGtech a VAG car specialist, saving money was never an issue.
