right had some time so had the A frame pillar trim out i pulled and at first nothing happened

answer there is a t25 screw holding it in up behind the " airbag" label look out there is a metal grommet around the screw

once that was done off came the panel in the usual way there are 2 push in clips in the middle and towards the bottom of A frame

note air bag at the top

quite a bit of mounting depth as well

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48641567@N05/5733083433/" title="SAM_2340 by macmusic, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5266/5733083433_f10553d370.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="SAM_2340"></a>

i reckon bout here as that is well below the airbag and its strap thing

Been a while since I wrote in here but I have finally taken some pics of my unit. I did stupidly manage to scratch my touch scree which I have shown in pics....just goes to show even when you are careful bad things can happen!!

My Mic in the A-pillar did not have to remove anything it was a lot more easy than I thought! The altea has these removable side parts to the dash that made this simple. I just hid most of the wires down the rubber seal.

The Unit in the Altea

The stupid scratch !! (I have learned not to notice this too much and have a screen protector on its was to stop me from doing any more damage!)

IMG_0149.jpg

My fake fascia to protect my unit....it has a sucker to hold on to the screen.

IMG_0150.jpg

Boot up screen (I stole this one off google images lol)

IMG_0151.jpg

Playing DVD Video (this unit is hacked to allow playback with out the handbrake up...I do not advise any one to watch a DVD and drive)

Menu Select Screen

Map in navigation (using igo)

Phone connection screen (greyed out i forgot to pair my phone at the time)

This is a good unit but it really takes its time to boot up but once its running its pretty much what I was after. Its good to look on www.avic411.com for hacks to update the maps etc.

Let me know what you think. I think once i have funds ready its time to upgrade the speaks and introduce a sub. I will wait to see what Mac Music does first ;)

Hi Nik
looks v good & loving the fake fascia

plan of attack is head unit first picking it up monday & in i hope tuesday , got the fascia for dave at sere perfect match got the connects2 wheel adapter as well & power supply for the aerial

while the head unit is out i will plug long phono's & remote amp wires on & hide em above the passenger foot well for now

also i have to connect a power lead for the tom tom to the head unit wiring so it comes on when i turn the ignition key & route that & the mike cable across to the rh side of the car

so that should keep me out of mischief

slowly slowly

head unit in and bluetooth module & mic plus the tomtom lead plumed in , all worked first time

the amp goes under the seat but the seat is going to have to come out so i can actually connect it all up

waiting on a ipod lead in the post so it can all come out again lol

some pix done but i wonder if i should start a proper altea upgrade thread rather than hi jacking this one ?

toying with doing the speakers in the front next & the tweets , i got a nasty feeling the wiring into the doors is a plug in to the main door frame chassis which means cutting into it some where rather than pushing a wire thru the door tube

see what the weather the next few days is like

milling around
N2KHL, try this to fix the scratch in the touchscreen:
Just rub it with a normal, clean, pencil eraser!

I got a terrible looking gash on my new LCD TV screen and then read about this method on the 'net. I didn't believe it would work, but a couple of rubs with a Ryman's rubber and the scratch was gone.

Maybe your touchscreen is actual glass, in which gse it wouldn't work, but worth a try ...

The only problem was in the rear doors where the 165mm were fowling on part of the metal of the door structure , the solution was to fit the next size down . The focal speakers were the highest speck without getting components , can't remember the model no though.

So do you reckon the Front standard Bass Speaker would fit into the Rear doors without any issues?

ok time for a small update

getting the old unit out isnt to bad as long as you have the right keys , once it out you are left with this
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48641567@N05/5762576740/" title="SAM_2382 by macmusic, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3010/5762576740_fec0aac467.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="SAM_2382"></a>

the new trim from dave @ sere has yellow clips all round it
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48641567@N05/5762577048/" title="SAM_2384 by macmusic, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5029/5762577048_0afd42ee4d.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="SAM_2384"></a>
you push it in and thump it into place if like me a corner didn't take get a 2 inch paint scraper and pry the whole thing back out

the blue tooth module is on the left hand side of the glove box

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48641567@N05/5762034321/" title="SAM_2388 by macmusic, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3373/5762034321_55535d90ef.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="SAM_2388"></a>

i took the glove box right out

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48641567@N05/5762033913/" title="SAM_2387 by macmusic, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2605/5762033913_09736b65fc.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="SAM_2387"></a>

and it is much harder to get it back in when its out next i will do a how too

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48641567@N05/5762577340/" title="SAM_2386 by macmusic, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5109/5762577340_b5815fc9be.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="SAM_2386"></a>

well had some time before rain stopped play

so got the A pillar trims out and got busy with the hole saw
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48641567@N05/5811989876/" title="SAM_2414 by macmusic, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5225/5811989876_7ed3653c2e.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="SAM_2414"></a>

luckily the hole cutter was a smidge small so a little easing with a stanley knife did the job

and there in
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48641567@N05/5811989568/" title="SAM_2413 by macmusic, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2600/5811989568_80746a4e93.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="SAM_2413"></a>

got the mid ranges into the doors too golf collars cut down & then the focals in

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48641567@N05/5811989142/" title="SAM_2412 by macmusic, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3529/5811989142_d6f8fd9c63.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="SAM_2412"></a>
i cut the wire to the in door tweeter so that in no longer connected but the ipod lead turned up & once i had upgraded the software in the head unit it plays video straight off the ipod or the iphone

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48641567@N05/5811425349/" title="SAM_2417 by macmusic, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3110/5811425349_26e5b846f3.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="SAM_2417"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48641567@N05/5811990210/" title="SAM_2415 by macmusic, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2366/5811990210_404fa737f5.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="SAM_2415"></a>

so getting there , the rain came so i am didnt get the crossovers & tweets wired in & i have a passenger foot well , with a glove box in it , so thats tomorrows job

the head units going to have to come out tomorrow to connect the cross over & i will put the phono's for the amp on then so fingers crossed i wont have to take it out again

i was thinking to doing components also at the start but couldn't be bothered with all the hassle of stripping the inner door or in your case the A pillar.

The Kappa's I have are good now since i've tweaked the Head units audio setting, but i still miss the Tweeter at a higher level in the door. the sound though is better than i had expected. since the rear doors are standard at the moment i may put components in the front and move the Kappas into the Back it they will fit. I've heard the depth is a bit narrower than the fronts but cannot confirm that as yet.

tbh the from what i have read and speaking to a friend who runs a car hifi install business replacing tweets in the doors is loads of agro windows, locks , etc , A pillar itself is one screw and pull ! the fun bit is getting all the dash & glove box out to get all the wiring thru & getting the glove box back properly no wonder it dont rattle or squeak so many screws in awkward places,

the air bag is only in the top half of the a pillar . but the bottom is empty so enough space for a tweet

also the wiring into the doors in thru a multi way plug so you cant just push another wire thru the door tube you have to use the standard wires , so what i did was cut into the head unit adapter plug lead & then run a pair of wires from the head unit to each cross over and back again

that way the standard wires in the car havnt been chopped or the head unit wires either just getting it all back into the dash was fun

sound stage is really high with good l -r positioning in the middle of the screen
