Yes both my front arches are rotten. One has just gone through also rust around the tail light on the boot lid.
Looks like foam sound proofing in the wing is holding the water and rusting it from the inside

Not good that like, what year is yours?

I've heard they are common for rusting in the window channel below the tailgate glass but not around the tail light.

Why do most vag cars rust around the front wheel arches?!

Mines a 56. Think it's a poor fitting light that's been rubbing against the boot lid.
I've had a mk4 golf that went in the same place and I've seen audi go there too. I'm sure they all have that foam in that soaks up water and rots the arch from the inside. Design fault that probably isn't covered by their 12 year rust cover.

Most likely your rear lights are broken in their fitments, common when a lazy mechanic doesn´t pay attention and just plugs them in.

The front fenders can rust, but its very very very uncommon for them to do, its the foam piece that soaks in the water and keep it moist all the time, you can just unscrew a little off the inner arch and pull them out, doesn´t matter at all.

I have yet to see any other place they rust "naturally" that isn´t because of lousy work in the cars life. Never ever heard of the rust in tailgate under window and i know a bunch in different VAG bodyshops/specialist, sure its not a different make or other model of seat? sounds like a golf/touran sort of thing...

They have a bad spot for rust over the front windscreen against the roof, you should check that often and repair what ever stone chip you get. Also A-pillars right before the plastik trims against the windscreen are (the one the wiper arm rests against) also a bad place for stone chips if you aren´t carefull and control it regular.

Just have a search on google and see how little you find, i have only seen 2 maybe on this forum ever mentioning it, 1 was the rear lights screwed up other was car with all doors rusting on the inside, but he didn´t had it from new and all doors had been repaired heavily/resprayed.

My a4 arches are the same, foam in there holding water. One wing done under warranty, another done with 70% audi goodwill. Could probably of argued it but already had a free wing and bonnet on an 8 year old car so dont mind too much. Might be worth asking seat about it, probably need a seat service history to get anywhere tho, brand loyalty n all that, you might be surprised.

My leons not showing any of those signs tho, and its the same age.

took the foam liners out of mine. Passenger side is ok, but they have caused the drivers side to start bubbling. Sure people on the VW forums have been having theirs repaired under bodywork warranty FOC. personally, i'm just going to get my arch rubbed down and localled. Take it to Seat and the chances of them colour matching A new wing into the rest the car will be slim to none on a red car. Been there before and ended up with doors and bonnet being painted to blend it in. Id rather stay as original as possible.

Mine has a very small bit in the rear tailgate window channel at the bottom where the water sits, i looked at one before i bought this one and that was on the same year and was also doing the same, may just be a coincidence then.

I'm considering taking the foam liners out of mine now, i wasn't aware of them holding water.

Well when I first bought the car and gave it the first hand wash I found the arch bubbling. Took it back got told I wasn't covered because I wasn't the original buyer and it was out of the three years for paint protection. Tried again at the same seat dealer I bought the car at and was told I stood no chance of claiming on the 12 year warranty.
The rot has gone right through so I rang seat uk and they said the dealer should never have said that. They should have taken photos and started the warranty process.
So tried another seat dealer. Again they told me I should no chance and was knackered because I don't have all my servicing done at a seat dealer. But he did take some photos on his phone to give the warrant guy on Monday.
Still on going at the moment.
Annoying seat dealers are so unwilling to help on warranty issues even when seat uk are so willing to help

I agree it's weird but it is there. It's not even an area that can be stone chipped. I didn't notice it till i first cleaned it. The channel was full of dirt. Once i removed the dirt i noticed it, it's not bad, just a little rusty dot that's got what you could call spiders legs around it and it's starting to lift the paint. I've checked the whole boot lid, it's totally original and never been re painted etc just my luck i guess!

That's annoying! The VAG group know its an issue, and original owner doesn't have any impact on it. They do favour full service history with them etc, it really shouldn't matter but its a case of them trying to wiggle out of it. If you keep shouting enough I'd expect at least some goodwill, but be warned, an A4 wing with 70% goodwill still cost £298...

It's very annoying! As i said in one of previuos posts, i did look at another Leon the same year prior to buying this one, it was just the same.

I think it would be cheaper to just buy a used tailgate and have it repainted and just swap them over and saves all the hassle. I may even consider a facelift one yet but do prefer the pre facelift tailgate really

Oh this rusty front wing business, hadn't heard of that one before. Pretty sure mine doesn't have this issue - yet.

Can someone just clarify please, the problem foam inside the wing can be accessed by taking out the plastic arch lining and then just a case of removing the foam and replacing the plastic lining?

Yes i believe so. I will be removing mine, give it all a wax oil and refit it. It's obviously there for a reason. So with wax oil it's the best of both worlds.

That's just how i see it anyway, doesn't make it right lol

But is yours a prefacelift or a facelift? :)
