Hi

My FR TDI Leon seems to smell fairly smelly on tick over, its still got the DPF and it's done 103k now.

Is anybody else's the same, service and all filters changed, and no smoke.

Any ideas?

My car did the same, went into seat and they redid an exhaust seal. I'll take a picture tomorrow and show you which one.

Is it like diesel exhaust fumes?

They do smell funny like a sweet sort of fumes smell when ticking over whilst doing a regen cycle. Normally you will notice the tickover is at 900 rpm rather than 700 when it's doing a regen.

This is just normal tick over, not doing a regen.

I know they will never not smell, but it seems strong at time.

Mine has the dpf removed and it absolutly stinks on Tickover and even when standing still in traffic with heaters on, it's a very strong smell of fumes, wouldn't of said it was sweet. I'd love to be able to stop it smelling to be honest but I just put up with it.

OOOOOhhhh, sounds like you could have a a gasket gone on your exhaust.

Those fumes could be nasty.

But people say it's just because the dpf Is removed though and everyone else I know who's had it done smells the same.

What sort of gasket do you mean? Where abouts on the exhaust system?

Smells like an old van running on red diesel haha.

I just ignore it, it's never caused any problems.

Still has the DPF as it does a regen fairly regular!

Where is the said gasket located on the exhaust?

There are numerous gaskets on the exhaust, normally one in every join.

Best way to tell if one has failed is to get a good look at the system and check for soot around the joints.

An exhaust place will do this for you.

On the turbo itself?

Mine sometimes has a slight smell through the vents.

Can this gasket cause the turbo "siren"

Well it's getting colder out again, and I have noticed the car smelling a lot, through the vents and outside the car.

It seem to be only when stationary, and if sitting for 5mins or more in traffic, when setting off and revs raise to 2000rpm+ the car will smoke which is grey. All fuild levels are fine, it's done it since I bought it last year.

With the car due for service in 400miles, I am starting to think the oil wasn't DPF compatible, when I serviced the car in April, as the smell and regens seem bad since summer.

120k, DPF in place, mostly short trips, but does see the dual carriageway or fast roads 3-4 times a week.

Thanks
Luke

I don't think its anything to worry about unless its very very strong smelling. My brothers MK1 FR smells like that, my Audi A3 8L smells the same and my MK2 smells like it but not as strong as the other two.

My A3 is on 177k though and my bro's MK1 is on 150+k

Mines does this when stationary I just press the recirc button on the climate so it's stops the air from outside getting in so stops the smell of fumes
