Gearbox oil

Hi All
I thought I once read something about changing gearbox oil for a different grade but cant remember for sure.... I have a 04 reg PD130 TDI SE and second gear is sometimes a bit "slow". A colleague at work with a SEAT had similar problem and said it was better after having gear oil changed but as he knows nothing about cars he had no idea as to what grade was used.
Any advice appreciated, thanks
