Preston, Lancs
Thanks im sure you want to know too.

I’ve tried it - doesn’t work for mine. Car refuses to start each time. I got up to 12 attempts and it just done the same thing every time.
I have Ghost II though - not sure what the differences between Ghost and Ghost II are.
Even happier with it now haha :)

Hi guys, just got my cupra 290 but it's not keyless and does not have a push button start function, so would this mean it would be pointless having a Ghost 2 Immobiliser fitted? I have had many company's tell me i should still get one fitted even though I don't have a push button start on my cupra 290 and from what I gathered if they don't have the keys they can't start the vehicle? And would anyone know if the a vehicle without keyless start can still be driven away? If so then I would invest in the Ghost. TIA

I'm not sure why keyless would have any effect. I had Ghost immobilisers fited to my two previous cars and they had conventional key start. The only reason I don't have it on my Cupra Ateca was that the local specialists, even with the help of Autowatch themselves, couldn't get it to work. Although I must admit, doing all the button press thing to allow the car to start gets to be a pain in the backside compared to just jumping and pressing the start button. I did look for a system that would work wirelessly (with an ID tag on the keyring) and that led me to Smartrack Meta-Trak Deadlock - it puts a switch in the main electrical supply that's only closed when the tag is in proximity - but the fact I needed an annual subscription put me off - £150 a year.

The subject of car theft and keyless entry / keyless start is something that’s discussed periodically on various VAG forums. Interestingly, over on the Golf R forum (VWROC.com), with the mk7 / mk7.5 Golf R I don’t think that any forum member who‘s been unfortunate enough to have their car stolen has had a car with keyless entry / keyless start - their cars have all been stolen as a result of the perpetrators breaking into the car owners homes and stealing the keys.

I’d say that if you have concerns about your car being stolen;
  • Review and upgrade your home security as appropriate to make gaining unlawful access to your home by intruders as difficult as possible.
  • If you have a garage that’s used for storing items you don’t use and the garage is large enough to fit your car in, seriously consider having a clear out of those unused items and garage your car. Out of sight is out of mind, so removes temptation from opportunistic car thieves.
  • Get GAP insurance cover so if the worst does happen, you’re not left with an insurance payout that‘s insufficient for you to replace your car with something similar. Don’t buy the Seat branded GAP cover from the dealership though (usually horrendously expensive) - it’s cheaper to buy GAP direct from the provider.
  • Consider buying a visible physical security device - e.g. Disklok, Stoplock Pro Elite.
If anyone is determined enough to want to take someone else’s pride and joy, they’ll probably find a way to do it. IMHO the worst case scenario would be a perpetrator gaining access to an owner’s home during the night, standing beside the bed and threatening violence to them and their loved ones and demanding the keys - or the code to an immobiliser device such as Autowatch Ghost 2. In that situation, I’d let them take the car - a car can be replaced, whereas a loved one can’t 🤔.

Thanks for the reply but what I want to basically know please is that if a thief does not get their hands on my keys then can the vehicle still be driven away when it does not have keyless or a push button start button? I mean if thieves turn up and try to relay the signal using their gadgets does a keyless vehicle still start up? And would the doors still unlock upon the theives using the relay device? TIA

On the basis that the Leon’s car security is likely to be similar to the Golf, thefts of non-keyless Golf R’s as mentioned in my earlier post have been the result of the owner’s home being broken into and the keys being stolen. That suggests the keys are required to drive the car away, otherwise, why does a perpetrator go to the trouble of breaking in the owner’s home for the keys?

If any other forum members are non-keyless mk3 Leon owners who’ve been unfortunate enough to be victims of car theft, maybe they’ll contribute to this discussion thread.
