I explained the situation to the garage and he told me that it's a very high chance there has been some internal damage done, and the cost of a strip down to find out what, then the repair cost and then the rebuild cost etc, not really economically viable. Can sell it on to some one who can do a home fix.
Trust me dude, I dont want the hassle of doing this but I have learned from experience, cut and run is usually the best way.
If like you say, it runs fine apart from the starting issue, I wouldn't have thought there could be any internal damage. If you'd bent any valves or similar, you'd know about it surely, as it wouldn't run well.
If it was me I'd get the a new belt & tensioner on and give it a go !!
