Thanks for the link Bill, will read through the guys build. Was aware of the perils of torsional stress on valves from incorrect seating. I'd saved that PDF when you posted it for someone else. Good info, otherwise broken valves.

H17och, I'll let you know if I need help. Thanks.

Did see this as well --> Ebay Link

A friend has one He says he's used it on 16v heads and motorbike. He's gonna measure it and let me know. If it's 24mm or smaller it should work for the inlets.

H17och, I see what you mean regarding your spring compressor. Just spotted these in your build thread

Looks like quite a straight forward process with the G clamp.

Another question.

I have OEM piston rings going in. Will I need to gap the rings, or are they generally pre-gapped?

I'm probably going to sound dumb but why do you need a "special" tool to fit the valves, i know you need a spring compressor but whats the other bit for?

Little update. I've now added a Walbro fuel pump. Mounted it under the car rather than in the engine bay like some. I'm still trying to keep the bay as OEM as possible.

Also decided to buy a new turbo. My car still isn't boosting right. Most of the time it will be okay, but the odd time it will overboost as before. I've been though everything and the people I've spoken to all suggest boost creep or a cracked turbine housing. Whatever is up, it's whistling above 22psi and I need to keep watching the boost gauge. Can't reliably boot it.

So in the search for a better unit I grabbed a TD05H-18G hybrid. It's a Blouch item sourced through Scooby Clinic. Has a 14psi actuator and a ported turbine housing to hopefully eliminate all boost creep.

Thought I'd post a few pics how it arrived and after clocking the housings for the 1.8T.

As it came:

Back together with housings pointing in the correct directions:

Just need to weld on a couple of bosses to bolt the actuator to (area circled in pic). Shouldn't be too difficult. Bought some aluminium offcuts off ebay for the job.

Not sure when I'll get stuck in fitting it. Going to do the engine work at the same time. I'm waiting on some machine shops to get back with prices on some head work. Mainly fitting the new valve guides. If anyone knows of a good place in the south, then let me know.

Did you pin the housing again?

Recomended if you run high boost from it, as its not uncommon for the housings to rotate from the thrust. Happened to my FP. Vband alone did'nt hold it. (was 2.2 to 2.7bar boost at times tho on mine)

Thanks for the heads up. Wouldn't the exhaust, water and oil pipes stop the housing from rotating? Though I guess if it happened to you it's possible. I'll look into another pin location. Need to finalise and fine tune the rotation on the car.

water pipes are flexi's on mine as were oil.
I did'nt think it could happen until it did.. spoke with a fellow race competitor at the time (mark from Owen Developments) and it was apparently quite common when clocking housings and not pinned. Pinned mine and all was well again. It was high boost tho.

Good stuff will be interesting to see what condition the VF34 exhaust housing is in.. when are you planning on taking it off?

Cheers guys. I'm interested to see how this thing works out.

Off to Saudi for work later this week. I want to start on it when I get back.
