I replaced the interior light in my FR with a twin map reading version (£20 and worth the upgrade) and while doing it changed all the bulbs to LED and had no issues
That's fair comment, but I'd reckon that while its is glowing, it will still be drawing less current than the original filament bulb which will be pulling what voltage path there is down to some lower level and not even managing to glow.
Got it from the Skoda, think it was about £20 off the top of my head. Would take a pick for ya but don't have the car anymore.
It's a common part across the VAG range, mine was from a Golf GTI.
So I take it it is just the front part with the light and the switches that you replace as the rest of it looks the same. Am I best looking on Ebay for it?
How was it to wire in?

I would suggest any local friendly VW, Skoda or Seat garage or even local scrappies, Ebay will be a rip off for a item like this i guess.
Fitting is as simple as prizing off the lens two screws out swap the terminal connection over and then the same in reverse, pice of piss.
Nice one, had a wee looky on Ebay but it was going to be too much effort.
Next question.... I'll maybe going looking at scrapyards this weekend coming, what age of Golf/Skoda am I looking for? I know the equivalent age Fabia would probably be a go-er but I don't know what year of Golf I'm looking to find.

Mk4 golf, Mk1 fabia, or if your feeling technical Passat W8 but that involves some wiring and is best bought from a dealer. Probably a couple of audis also.
As said, pop off the clear cover, 2 screws and one plug.
Then you can also fit the little sun visor thing that you can also see in the pic and after that there is a sunglasses holder that goes where the drivers grab handle is.
