Watched the latest new episode of fifth gear at the weekend and they had the new Porsche 911 gt3 rs on there. To have the body coloured vent surrounds was an optional extra at a whopping £800!!!!!! For some painted plastic!!!!

Some good points to take into account, I never really thought about those sort of details. I am a little bit annoyed that my Cupra is lacking some of the extras in it, as it is the range topping trim.

It might seem like a stupid question but why do SEAT and Skoda get the “hand me downs”? I know it’s obviously the VW group and Audi is the premium brand but surely by purposefully making SEAT and Skoda’s designs worse, it will affect sales?

In VW's view it wont affect sales by reducing the quality because they hope they will manage to keep their potential customers in the VW group. If someone finds the Leon a bit rough around the edges, they might get a Golf or an A3 instead. VW haven't lost a sale in the Seat range, they gained one in the more profitable VW or Audi range instead. They dont intentionally lower the quality either, you have to remember the scale VW operate on. To make the Leon cheaper than the A3 you have to cut back in certain areas, this is done by using cheaper materials, construction methods and designs. If it costs €5 less to make each dash on the Leon than the Golf then after Seat make theoretically 500,000 cars, VW have saved €2.5million euro on the dashboard alone. Multiply this by the hundreds of parts in each car and the amount of cars they make across all models it makes sense for VW to cut back on the materials here and there to produce a cheaper car line.

Coming out of an 07 type r I think the interior is lovely. It could look a bit more special since its a cupra but other than that it's fine. All the touch points are high quality and it's well layed out.
Having worked at audi for years I don't feel cheated with Seat. I don't feel like I'm missing those nice interiors.

SEAT has definitely closed the gap to VW/Audi in recent years.

Does anyone know whether the 8 inch infotainment unit from the new VWs will retrofit into a 2018 Cupra?

They certainly have, but you can see the cost savings with things like:
    Felt lined glove boxes
    Felt line door bins
Covers for the center console (think the MK3 used to have these)
    Adjustable cup holders
    Smaller digital dash

I thought that the new golf infotainment unit was 9"? Or is that just the screensize with a same size unit?

The CUPRA brand may change all this as they want to charge a higher premium for the models so the finishes may be better.

A smarter infotainment screen would be great. Even the new Arona's looks better than the unit in Cupra 300.

Short answer no, purely because the physical build quality of the interiors is still far better than a lot of other makes imo and ultimately you get what you pay for. Yes the a3 interior might be slightly better but overall for a similar spec car, do I really want to spend an extra 5k over and above my leon for a 'slightly nicer' interior??

Also the new A1 is being made in the seat factory, the build quality between Ibiza / Polo / fabia / golf/ Leon is pretty much the same.

Interesting that Audi have allowed that. Must be happy with Martorell's standards. And probably frees up sum room at their gaff

They have been building Audis there for a while. Q3 has been built there for a good few years.

My brother was most put out to find out his Q3 was build in the same place as my Leon. Apparently he thought being an Audi would attract a superior build facility

I don't think either are particularly inspiring actually, being on my second MK3 Leon and having had a Golf GTI in between. The Golf's interior definitely feels more plush with the VW hard plastic being considerably less "scratchy" than the SEAT's, and the felt-lined door pockets and glovebox. Having said that, my facelift Leon probably rattles less so it goes to show the VW thing is only perceived quality which is not quite the same as actual build quality.

How many times a day do you ask him 'Hows your SEAT?'

I just drop in occassionally. It was even funnier when a caravan wiped out the rear near side panel within 3 hours of him collecting it

Agree on the felted door cards and glove box but I think the Leon feels more modern, although the mk7.5 with new infotainment and digital dash helps the golf massively over the pre facelift dash.
I will say though my GTD had more restyles and suspension creaks than I could put up with, guess they fixed these with the 7.5s

An interesting point, and with all the of the group's models getting more and more similar it would seem even more so these days that you are just paying for the badge.

A lot more in some cases if you get sucked into buying an Audi. Trying to convince someone that the Ateca and Q3 are effectively the same car and being told they cant be proves there is plenty of badge snobbery

This has been going-on forever in the car building game, a corporation squeezing as many models/variants as possible out of the one bodyshell or platform.
1960's BMC and Rootes Group were always at it - you could have your best-selling Morris 1100 in a choice of Austin, MG, Riley, Wolsely or posh Vanden Plas brands, likewise a Hillman Hunter could also be had as a Singer, Sunbeam or a luxury Humber as just 2 examples.

Maybe it was all a bit more obvious back then, but later, more subtle examples like the Mazda 323/Ford Lazer, (Asian Mk.3 Escort) and Daihatsu Charmant/Toyota Corolla and SAAB 9000/FIAT Croma/Lancia Thema/Alfa 164 from the 80's abound also. In the late 90's there was Mitsubishi Carisma/Proton Waja/Volvo V40 and others like the VW-built SEAT Arosa.

A workmate was pondering buying a new Audi A1 a couple of years back, until I quipped it was a lot of money
    for a well-trimmed Polo, (he hadn't realised....)
