Try the coolant sensor, does not always throw a code, but can over/ under fuel the engine if it reports the incorrect temp, you may have did not read all the post, sounds like it could be coil / H/T related too:confused:

Just had a quick read, is it possible they damaged one of the O2 sensors's while messing with the exhaust:shrug: It may not show on a scan or they may not want you to see this, as you would blame them ;)

I had a similar problem of misfiring on my Toledo V5 (170) it turned out to be coilpacks.

tip: for future MOT's in Leicester I can recommend a very good and cheap place.

I've also had it mentioned that it could be an ignition amplifier or coil pack, this was during a conversation with Stealth yesterday.

It's at an independant VW garage tomorrow morning, hopefully they'll be able to diagnose with some accuracy.

I'll let you know the outcome.

Well.

The car has been at the garage all day.

At first it wasn't misfiring, but it eventually did (thank goodness). They hooked it up to check the error codes and it reported NOTHING.

They had a coilpack in stock, so tried that. Still the same.

They have identified that it is the 3rd cylinder that is at fault, but say it isn't a mechanical fault but something electrical.

They ran out of time today (and ideas?), they have kept it overnight and will try again tomorrow.

hopefully it's just something like a broken wire that sometimes fails to make a connection

Hmm if its just one cylinder my money would have been on the plug or HT lead but you say these have been replaced. Excuse my ignorance but is there a seperate injector per cylinder? Without resorting to mechanical defects, thats about the only other thing that isnt common to all cyclinders I think.

Goose, this sounds like the same problem I had recently on my v5 150bhp - cylinder 4 wasn't firing, so the engine was running lumpy and producing a bad sulphury smell. Problem was intermittent, sometimes it would run ok. Nothing showed up on VAG-COM diagnostics. Checked the leads, plugs and changed the coil pack with no improvement. Then I replaced the ignition control module and it solved the problem. Its an easy part to change, just bolts on to the bulkhead behind the engine. Original part from VW is about £200 but I picked up a generic online for around half that. Let me know if you want more info.

hi, have you had a look at the lanbda sensor (oxygen sensor) it normally sits somewhere in the exhaust system.

Excactly the same, cylinder 4 not firing (though yesterday I was told it was cylinder 3) The garage has diagnosed it as a "power output stage", will cost around £220 for a genuine replacement. He said this part sits on the bulk head and is dead easy to fit!!

I wonder if this is the same part, described differently.

I've just checked Eurocarparts for an "ignition control module" and it's listing "BERU 413440310 IGNITION COIL PACK BORA GOLF PASSAT 2.3 V5 AGZ AQN - £101.30"

Is this it?

Google has kindly informed me that a power output stage is covered by the following descriptions.

"Ignition Amplifier/Power Output Stage/Ignition Control Unit"

Well done to Stealth Racing who diagnosed this purely based on my telephone description of the problem. If only I could have booked the car in there prior to the 24th Nov.

Well done to Lion Garage in Hinckley, they spent 2 days working on the car, and finally diagnosed the "power output stage" this afternoon. They charged me absolutely nothing for their time and effort. Fantastic customer service. SEAT take note.

Thanks to Pablo, he's been suffering the same problems and kindly posted the remedy to his problem this afternoon.

And a final than you to those who have given their valuable time and effort to offer your opinions and help.

All I need to know now, is where can I get one from without paying through the nose (or going anywhere near a SEAT dealership?

You can add 'Ignition Transformer' and 'Ignition Module' to your list of names for this item as well. The part you mention from ECP is not wht you want, that part is actually the coil pack listed under the wrong item (I bought this coil pack from them when trying to resolve the problem on my car). I don't think ECP do them. OEM units are around £220, but I got my unit from the imaginitively named www.ignitionmodules.co.uk. (I actually placed a request for the part on www.247spares.co.uk and the ignition modules guy contacted me - you might want to do the same as he quoted me £95 + VAT, which is a bit less than the £118 + VAT on his website). He did do free next day delivery though. The unit isn't OEM, but it works fine and I didn't really care as long as it got my car going again. And it really is a five minute job to fit it.

Part arrived yesterday. Fitted by torch light last night.

Car now runs like a peach again.

I suppose the 60K service (which is due) should be cheaper, now that I've replaced the plugs, lead and air filter!!
