Is my Toledo dead?

Okay,
I have a wonderful Toledo Sports 2.0l which I have re-sprayed a lighter Rover red as the paint on this P reg car was terrible when I bought the car. So I am reluctent to admit it may have gone to that carpark in the sky..


1) I have a knocking noise in the back somewhere. It sounds like metal on metal. Best was to describe is if you had one of those musical triangle things and tapped it everythime you took a sharp bend.

2)Its really hard to get into 1st gear. 2 thru 5 are perfect, as is reverse but 1st is hard. It does not crunch just feels like its blocked.

3) I know I have a problem on the front left somewhere. I am 90% sure its the top mount but may not be.


I am interested in peoples opinion on 1 and 2 as if these are small problems I may have them fixed and keep the car. Its only done 82,000 and has taken me to Madrid, France and Amsterdam by road so its got history!

1 and 3 sound like worn suspension bushes, they don't usually cost much to get replaced. I reckon number 2 is either a worn clutch or a stretched clutch cable.

I'd get it into a decent garage and let them loose on it, if they quote more than £500 then it might be time to think about a replacement...

Just taken my Toledo to the local garage. Issue with the front turned out to be NSF CV Joint which was easy to repair and cheap £150 inc labour and VAT so chuffed with that.

Bloke in the garage reckoned my car keeps dying due to a sensor of some descrip but he could not tell me what one as his diagnostics machine did not have the right connection lol
(What a pratt)

The metal on metal noise was an issue with the heat shield. its knocking on the downpipe and, after a bit of playing we bodged it and, touch wood, there is no noise as of yet.

tack weld the heat shield back on or rip it off as most do, i've had this problem before.

First gear not going in is probably a badly adjusted clutch cable/clutch. Just check the linkage though, its a series of bars running from the gearstick to the box.

Your dying problems if its at low revs is most likely a dirty throttle body.

was thinking of uprating the clutch so i may replace and align it at the same time.

I dare not touch the gearbox so that may be a garage job (again)

Services the car this morning and took the throttle body apart. There was more crap then i care to admit, cleaned it out and drove it home from Norfolk and it was smooth, quite an never cut out. Plus it has that nice kick again. (Thank you cupra kid)

No problem :D its amasing how a little oil and muck can make such a big difference, learned this on my first 2.0 8v. Bad design really having the oil breather go straight back into the throttle body.

The WHOLE ENGINE IS BADLY DESIGNED.!!!

It took me nearly an hour to open the thermostat housing due to the placement and what makes me laugh is it could be so much more powerful then they made it 2.0l 8v is a big lump but they toped it off and went all cheap on the pipes and the fuel system.

Anyway enough moaning I have just had my second shower of the day trying to get rid of all the crap i was covered in. I am now finished for the night and I have diamond black on all four and my bank manager hates me!

LONG LIVE THE CLASSICS!!!!

LOL time for an update.

1) Turned out to be the CV joint. MOT Failure £130.00 including fitting

2) Worn clutch cable. £80.00 repair bill

3) The problem was front left.

After full service, new CV and new discs and pads on the rear it passed its ticket! Horray!:lol:

Now for the problem at low revs. Tried tightening the throttle cable and adjusting the idle speed, cleared out the body and everything was fine. Turned on my Aircon and the problem came back.

I now know its a problem concerning the Aircon. The car only has problems with AC on. Normal idle os 900 which is perfect but with the ac on the car dies to less than 200 when i slow down to stop. I drop the clutch and the car dies.

Any ideas. Last issue on my wonderful 'back from the dead' Toledo 2.0l 8v Sports!

Can you get someone with VAG-com to read out the fault codes?

I know that on my car, which is a Mk.2 Toledo TDI, activating the air cooling causes the ECU to increase the engine power so as to cope with the increased load of the compressor. It sounds as though you are not seeing that, and that the compressor is stalling the car.

But it will be difficult to trace, it isn't a simple matter of a wire going from the aircon switch to the ECU, the two processors exchange signals over the data bus as far as I know.
