I'm wondering whether to upgrade from 2001 Leon Cupra 1.8 20VT (97K on the clock) to a 2003 Cupra R... (27,000 miles)...

I'm very tempted, but worried about spending the extra money £5-6k...

Anyone done it and what's the verdict?

Pros and Cons?

i was looking at the same thing mate.

but decided it was not worth it for 40bhp max.

i decided against and was only looking at spending 2.5k to do it, def would not for 6k id rather spend 8 and get ihi

Well I changed from a 2000 Y-reg Cupra 20Vt to a 2003 LCR, the change made slightly simpler by the fact the Cupra was a right-off.

In between I also had a 2002 Mk1V Golf GTi 1.8T for a year which I simply hated.

Cons
Slightly less fuel economy
Front tyres that wear quick 7-10k miles and cost more ££
Brake pads 17k miles a time
Insurance is more

Pros
Braking is far better that the Cupra, never liked the Cupra brakes
Cornering is better, falls over less in the corners, quicker steering rack (still not brilliant though IMO)
Love the Looks
Love the all-black interior

Not sure whether getting more attention in the car is a Pro or Con

Back from the dead
Pros for Cupra
Tyres and brakes are cheaper
Fuel consumption marginally better
Insurance cheaper
More options available from dealers (leather / cruise / dipping mirrors)
Less likely to get nicked from outside house

Pros for LCR
Marmite bumper kit (some prefer Cupra, others R)
Slightly (and I mean slightly) quicker
Nice wheel and black headliner / recaroesque seats
Better braking
Marginally more kerb appeal
Its questionable that it even has a better resale since increased volume
Slightly better platform to start modding from if your really serious

been there too only i was thinking of going from a 2004 cupra leon to a 2003-04 lcr, ended up getting a fmic, stage 2, ind kit 4bar etc for less than what the total change over would have cost me and now have more power than the lcr, no brembos tho pagid fr pads on the standard callipers work well.

£5-£6k to change

id spend £3k on

suspension £500 approx
arb's £300 approx
brakes £750 approx

then do you remap it, full system etc for about 230hp or buy a second hand lcr/tt k04 and manifold for say £600 and then map that to lcr power

i wouldnt spend the money to go for the lcr personally

If you have leather seats etc i think its a bit of a down grade to the LCR! Awsome are doing an offer on 6 pot tarox at the moment.

Just look at Robdons car, its has all the things i wanted in a leon, recaros leather 18's cupra r kit and blue! Love blue cars! anyway i would says thats nice over any lcr out there at the moment

I just changed from an 05 plate FR 20vt to a 55 plate LCR.

Looked into upgrading the FR to full LCR spec, performance mods, styling (interior & exterior) Brembo's etc. and there wasn't all that much difference in cost between modifying / upgrading.

At the end of the day, no matter what I did to the FR, it would still never be "the real thing"

Insurance went down by £68 (FR was modified - LCR is standard).

So how much difference does a re-map really make to the Cupra. I know that a standard Revo takes it from 180 to about 210 bhp. Is it the increase in torque which makes the real difference?
