LED headlights

Took delivery of our Ibiza on Friday, with the optional LED lights. They’re brilliant (pun not intended) on dipped but I was surprised to see that they don’t appear to have headlamp washers as well? They auto level as you’d expect, but every other car with xenon/LED lights that we’ve had has had self levelling and headlight washers. Is ours normal, or does anyone have headlamp washers on their lights?

Fairly certain yours are normal. My Xcellence with LED headlines doesn’t have headlamp washers.

Ah okay. That’s good to know. I thought it was a legal requirement, but obviously not!
Though if ifd had them it would perhaps have helped keep some of this off them when I drove home!

Ha! Yeah I saw your photos in the 1st March thread - your car looks great by the way (when it’s not covered in slush!)

I hadn’t heard that it was a legal requirement - I’d guess that Seat would be on top of that, unless they’ve missed it on both our cars! I didn’t see it in the brochure or specs anywhere though.

I’ve never had a car with headlight washers, and honestly if it were an extra I’d never get it. Can’t see myself ever using them?

To be fair, it’s a legal requirement for factory fitted xenon lights, and our A3 with LEDs has them so I assumed it must be. But it can’t actually be a legal requirement for LEDs otherwise we’d have them!

They are the abolute nuts though.

Given the rubbish long life halogen bulbs that are the alternative from VAG, ordering LED is a no brainer.

I've had 2 identical SEATS, 1 with standard headllights and one with LED. The difference is night and day (literallly).

Definitely agree - absolutely love them and think they make the car look great! Really reasonably priced option too.

Bar the possible exceptions of the panoramic roof and the desire red paint I think all of the options are very reasonable price-wise. Comfort access was only around £250, dual climate and adaptive cruise were about £200 each, and rear camera and parking sensors all round just £400 or so. Individually all very reasonable... though when combined they all add up ;)

Just did some googling and found what I think are the relevant standards. Headlight cleaning systems are only required if the LED headlights on dipped beam produce more than 2000 lumens. See 6.2.9 here (It's a rather lengthy document...)

Ah great - good work. I’m guessing SEATs LEDs are 1,999 lumens then. Saves the cost of a headlamp wash system

I suspect (but not 100% sure) if it's 2000 lms output over a small projector area (xenon type) output, washers are required. However in Seat LEDs, they are over mutiple LED units, each individual light source lights up less than 2000lm each, but perhaps over the 5-6 separate LEDs it may give a total of 2000+ Lumens. Also I did notice the Mercs and BMWs also do not have these washers, but they tend to have 2x LED units per headlight unit or 4 in total. Perhaps 1500lms per LED unit, total more than 2000. However if you notice the current Audi A3 where it's 1 LED light source per headlamp, there are the washers as standard. Washers tend to drain the washing tank VERY quickly.

I guess Leds don't cause as much glare as their xenon counterparts, when the headlamps are dirty, but from experience, when it's dirty, the light output can drop noticeably on Leon LEDs, but on xenon (on Ibiza) they are still pretty bright.

My 2013 Leon 'first car in segment to offer full LED headlights' had headlight washers as standard, without winter pack. Perhaps at the time, included them to play it safe. 2014 models onwards only with winter pack.

I mean if you give your headlights a good wipe with a wet sponge and then a microfibre cloth to dry it off, every once in a while it should be fine.

I’m still confused!! Why do you guys want headlight washers?? I’ve never seen them in action or ever heard about them being mentioned anywhere but this post, so confused.

All car’s with factory xenons that we’ve had came with headlamp washers, as does the A3 with LEDs. They’re helpful in keeping the lights clean in wet / salty conditions, and would certainly have helped on my drive back from Liverpool. By the time I’d done 250 miles they were significantly less bright, particularly on main beam for some reason, than when clean. Now, given the conditions there’s a chance they’d have frozen and been useless anyway...but last weeks weather was extraordinary! It’s not the end of the world that they’re not fitted, and I now understand why :)

There have been a few post's on here about them, mainly as a result that they drink lots of water, but using obd11 or vcds you can code it so they don't wash as often thus reducing water usage.

In some countries these are now a legal requirement to be fitted and i have certainly seen some comments on the web saying its an MOT failure if you don't have them working (but its not clear under what circumstances (eg is it just LED Lights etc)).

I don't think its as fast as 70, but I drive the Toledo so rarely at night I cant remember the exact speed. It may be around 50, since on the country roads around here I can clearly notice the beams height adjustment after the switch from high to dip or vice versa.

I wish I had got them on mine., though it was the difference of getting it in a few weeks to a few months  Yea the standard Long Life bulbs are verging on being dangerous they are so dull. The first thing I did with mine was purchase 2 pairs of Philips Extreme Vision +130s, marked improvement
