No need to use tape at all, Ive never used it and I never have wax left in the gaps etc.

Very shiny by the way :D

Because I'm a noob in detailing and I don't have a garage to work while it rains,
I asked for help.

what I did:
Washed 1st with Poorboys Super Slick & Suds
Clayed with 3M clay bar
PC polisher with yellow pad and 1z Ultra Paint Polish

My mate did (two weeks later):

Washed with souveran shampoo
Used rotary polisher on the rough spots with orange pad and Menzerna Paint Polish
and PC with green pad and Menzerna Paint Polish.
then PC with blue pad and final finish polish
LSP used was OCW

Car was taped with 3M tape.

On the engine bay:
engine degreaser (Laquer ? I think) followed by Megs Hyperdresser

Oh and a final shot from the wheel (polished with 1z PP, sealed with poorboys wheel sealant)

i'd like to clean my engine bay....

did you just spray on the degreaser then rinse it off with water (hose)?

did you protect things like the coil packs before you did it?

I'd like to do it but don't fancy damaging any of the electronics/ignition!

Cheers! :D

Yes, that was the process to clean the engine. Engine degreaser spayed all over and then
rinse off, no particular protection and no problems afterwards.
But it's a risk I know. It was not done with the hose pouring water itself but with the help of a shower.

In fact I live in Portugal, but the roads here are muddy because its rainning a lot.
And like RobDon said, better to tape window rubbers and other plastics, or else, like
I did the 1st time, you get twice the work of cleaning the mess.
