After reading into it I'm still unsure so after advice..

Ok the cars been off the road a couple of years and only recently put back on. Done around 70 miles of sensible driving ran sweet then had a little blast today (maybe 3 miles) had a slow drive back and left running on drive for a couple of minutes.

Whilst idling on the drive temperature gauge started getting high around 105 at highest point then settling back to 90 then would rise again then settle back to 90 as fans were kicking in.

I opened the bonnet to check coolant coolant level looked ok but it was hot under there!! To touch and the heat as opened the bonnet.

From what I've read its possibly thermostat or waterpump. But just so I've got a better idea before taking it in has anybody else had the same happen if so what was the outcome? Thanks

Same issue here.
Replaced thermostat and coolant, didn’t fix it.
Just replaced cambelt & waterpump as they were both due, hoping to take for a blast this weekend to make sure it’s cured it!

Might have a go at thermostat myself weekend if not then I'll have to take garage for waterpump. What did it cost you if you dont mind me asking? Or did you do the work yourself?

Thermostat is a bitch due to its location. But it was seized so deffo needed doing. But the problems continued hence the waterpump.

I work for a Seat dealer so had staff rates so paid £15 for the thermostat & 1 1/2 hours labour so like £70 including VAT, then £290 for cambelt & waterpump including labour & VAT but again a bitch of a job which took them 5 hours to do.

Used to use a specialist but working at Seat it’s just convenient to get it done at work.

If the problem continues the only other thing to change is the radiator

Faulty thermostat usually results in overcooling and it struggles to reach 90.

Fans have two speeds and it's common for the resistor to go so that only the emergency high speed mode works. So it will go past 90 then back to 90 over and over in standing traffic.

Turn air con on and the fans should work at normal speed if the resistor is ok.

Water pump will usually only give these symptoms if one of the propellers has snapped. Completely knackered pump would mean overheating and not even the high speed fan could stop it.

Mine does exactly this, always has done. Mine has had a new thermostat, water pump and coolant during my ownership. All fans work fine.
Its just what it does.

Pretty sure it's never done this before. With how hot it was under the bonnet got a bit worried. It's done just under 78k I need to check through paperwork to see if and when waterpump and cambelt has been done if not probably time to get done anyway

I will try this when I get home from work. Would this cause under the bonnet to get overly heated too? Thanks

Mine did this, was brittle wires under the battery tray area. Also check the the fans are coming in.

You can check the water pump by looking at the return flow to the coolant header tank. It's the small pipe connected to the top, unclip it and stick it in the top of the bottle.

There should be a steady stream of coolant at idle which increases with engine revs. If the flow stops and starts the impellor on the pump is broke, there's videos on you tube showing what the flow should look like.

As said above also check the fans, the fuse box on top of the battery often creates cooling, AC and ABS problems. Replaced mine recently it was throwing an ABS code, £15 off Amazon and 20 minutes to fit.

I'm going to fit a manual fan switch to mine, as i use it mainly on track so it would benefit from this i reckon!

I agree with 'Alexis27' most likely the resistor controlling the slow speed fan has packed up as he described.

Had my car in at work today, the master tech has diagnosed the slow speed fan isn’t working due to the resistor.
The AC fan not working.
High speed fan is working.

Posting as thought this might help you get yours fixed!

Just make sure the nut is tight on the blade, mine came off yesterday! We’ve put a better nut on it now but as it’s cheap it’s not quite the best quality BUT I’ve two track days coming up so I’ll see how good they are

Just replaced both radiator fans, £102 from Euro car parts. Problem..
Solved!
Just done both my fans..never done before (I'm not much on a mechanic lol) was more awkward than I thought especially starting it at nearly 6 was dark by half past had the trusty torch on my phone. Just took it for a blast and no overheating after so looks like it's done the trick

Got both fans and a radiator for £75 + delivery off Ebay so I've got a free rad really which is a bonus too

When you turn heaters on should both fans be moving or just the smaller? Both were moving hope that's all good
