May be a silly question but if you remove a silencer do you need to inform your insurance company?

I would have thought your insurer would need to be made aware of any modifications to the car. Pretty unlikely your premium would rise by much if at all for removing a silencer though.

The BMs are fantastic cars and I’m a real fan having had 130’s, M3s etc in the past, great sounding engines. Interestingly my 280 with a light stage 1 map was exactly the same pace in a straight line as a mapped and modified (FMIC, Exhaust etc) “400” bhp M135... on track and repeated lots. Now the Cupra has had the full remap with DSG it feels a bit more in the direction of bonkers fast

Who did you choose for the remap? Last time I checked Revo didn't do the DSG, only APR or indie.

Also I don't suppose you have before and after numbers? Heard of people mapping 280s and doing a before and after - stock being over 300 brake. Interesting on a 276BHP car...

Heard 350+ is easily possible with a simple stage 1.

Revo now do Stage 1, 2 & 3 engine maps for the 280 and they also have DSG maps to go with each of them.

Got 380hp & 510nm from a high torque apr stage one tune (with dsg map too). Car has induction stuff, but otherwise engine stock.

Meaty.

Don't suppose you stuck it on a dyno before the map? Just keen to know what the 280s actually put out stock.

See my thread for details:

Yes, standard it was 290 ish from memory... I’ve posted up several vids on track if you want to see real world performance. The vids are with the 350 bhp map, now with the DSG map and tweaks its 276 bhp but feels a fair bit quicker. I will get some track vids put up with the new map after Oulton in a few weeks :)

So do you have to get an ECU map and a separate DSG map too?

That's a grand on a remap. Ouch.

yes as with all as far as i know its two maps. thats while you wait for black friday 25 per cent discount. and when you go stage 2 you only pay difference in stage 1 and 2 map

drone at 70 mph?

Planning to get a cupra, but I don't want anything that drones while cruising around UK legal speed limits.

Is the stock setup quite while cruising in normal mode? how does it compare to an FR?
Basically I want engine sound while hammering it, but not when cruising :ban:

The stock ST 280s are actually pretty quiet, a little too quiet imo.

Removing the front silencer was absolutely perfect for me. Adds a noticeable rasp when you're on it but doesn't drone at all at a cruise. Anything under about 1/4 throttle it hardly makes any noise at all in the cabin.

If it's actual engine noise you're after rather than exhaust noise, all Cupras have an artificial induction noise piped into the cabin when you have the engine set to its sportier modes, so this kinda ticks that box for you. A lot of peeps don't really like it though...

The 290s and 300s have more characterful exhausts as stock, but as I've never driven one I couldn't comment on drone.

If you get an ST 280 though, lob off the front silencer and you've got pretty much exactly what you're after.

I have a 290 ST and can confirm it is also very quiet. I'm wondering if a similar exhaust mod could help.

I'd definitely recommend it mate. Won't cost much (under £100) and proper livens up the exhaust note. You could easily do it yourself if you're a half decent welder.

Plus the 290s have more cracks and pops as standard so you should have some proper popcorn on the overrun

Importantly though it doesn't add any drone - on the 280 at any rate - so it won't mither you on long journeys.

That sounds like what I'm after! And a lot cheaper than a full cat back.
