Should the fan run on after the engine is turned off? It doesn't do it all the time. (occasional smell of burning!)

If it's a diesel the car has a thing on it called a diesel particulate filter (dpf). This collects all the soot from the exhaust and it needs cleaning out every now and again. To do this the car heats the exhaust up really hot. If you was to park while it's doing it then the fans would stay on at full pelt to help cool it down.

Not uncommon for most modern cars to keep their fans running after ignition off, when its hot or during a DPF cycle as Dean says.

There are various pumps etc that also can remain running after shutdown to keep coolant running around the engine and turbo system. They turn off automatically within a few minutes.
