Are you running an induction kit? Mine makes the same, although I get more of a turbo chatter type noise when I dip the clutch?

Hard to say from the description, but checking all the pipework would be the first thing i would do.

I've got a pod filter and blanked off the dump valve but it started before I did that, I got auditec to look at it and they couldn't find any visible problem,

Removed it and blanked off the pipes

I'm still confused tbh, why would you do that? Where did you get the idea to do that?......You can't run a turbocharged car without a DV!

The sound you describe is probably the air pressure destroying your turbo by forcing it to stall when there is nowhere for the boost to go when you lift off the throttle

All the people I asked before I did it mostly mechanics all said its a load of rubbish that it ruins turbos, it runs and boosts fine, just got that noise.

You know the diverter valve is required to recirculate the unused air....it is not a dump valve....you WILL blow your turbo so your mechanic friends were obviously seeing nice big repair fees for replacing your turbo

Hmmm, I think I'll put it back on, thanks for your advice,

Yes it needs to go back on buddy! You CANNOT run a (petrol) turbo without one!

edit: The loud air intake noise is probably just the induction noise from having replaced the airbox with open filter, that is normal and nothing to worry about.
