Recently bought a seat ibiza sport 1.4 petrol, and it seems my ibiza doesn't like low revs, for exmaple when driving down the motorway on 5th gear at 60mph my MPG seems to be less than when driving at 70mph (yes I am going by on board computer). Driving at 80 mph gives me more MPG compared to 70 and 60.

If I can remember correctly driving at 60mph on 5th gives me approx 35mpg
70mph = 42MPG
80mph = 48MPG
(these are just approx figures)

can't seem to make sense of this. am I relying on the computer too much and its showing inaccurate information ?

also if you've owned a 1.4 seat or VW i'd like to hear your thoughts on fuel economy, not sure if its just my ibiza but seems to drink petrol like there is no tomorrow on short trips.

Are you sure the display isn't set to litres per 100 km? 3.5, 4.2, 4.8 would make more sense as speed increases.

By the way my 1.4/85bhp Ibiza does about 44mpg average.

my average over the last 5000 kms is 37mpg.

I do a lot of short travels though.

I can get up to 50mpg on long travels if I'm carefull

That would make more sense, ill double check tomorrow but I'm pretty sure its MPG as thats all I focus on now . I try to drive in highest gears possible around town to save fuel.

I try to avoid driving on lower gears at all costs, I've noticed a big difference in fuel consumption for shorter trips. 4th for 30mph.

Firstly I'm from rural Herefordshire where we make the Scots and Yorkshiremen seem positively frivolous with money !

Secondly the car is a 63 plate Toca SC 1.4 86hp petrol. I did have the economy up near 65mpg at one point but the last 6 miles were stop start with traffic lights and teatime traffic.

I have had isolated journeys where the mpg is unbelievably good, most recently getting mid 50's mpg out of the Toledo for a fast 60 mile A-road and motorway trip. Subsequently I noticed the average gradient on the trip was down hill, and there was a strong tailwind that day.
This became really obvious when the return trip mpg at the same speed was only in the high 30's.

Likewise, my 365 bhp F-150 used to average only 18 mpg, but often gave just 14 on the way to work. One fine day, with a tailwind and a slight down gradient again it did 30 mpg on a 50 mile trip at 70 mph. I was over the moon :)
