Don't get carried away with it, there's plenty more out there in better condition than that one. If it's looked after so much then why did it take 3 attempts to get an MOT this year?

Was just about to say, it doesn't seem like the previous owner took much care of it.

Mate you came on to ask an opinion, and you got numerous peoples opinion. Don't ask for one if you can't hack what people are going to say.

At the end of the day it's your money, if you want to buy it then fine, but if it was me - I'd source another.

On what grounds could I justify a refund of the deposit?

Who are you buying it from? Seems bizarre for a deposit to non-refundable.
If the seller isn't willing to refund your deposit, I think that speaks for itself.

The first Leon I looked was as cleeeeean as a whistle - 16k miles on a 4yr old car, it threw an EML and limp mode on a test drive, and I put a deposit on to secure it while they got it sorted. Long story short, it all seemed so good to be true, and then discussing with a few on here (a bit like you did on your other thread) I decided against it, and despite the seller spending apparently a grand on sorting it out, I got my deposit back and walked away.

The car I eventually bought needed a £200 deposit to secure before I even saw it (it was 200miles away), and that was also unconditionally refundable up until the point I paid the balance.

You can mitigate all these issues and dodgy history as much as you want and its your money after all, but you are asking for folks advice and they are giving it.

There's every chance it could all work out lovely, there is a chance you could walk, go and buy a minter and it goes wrong as you drive away - that's just the fun of buying a car.

I hope whatever you choose to do works out for you though :)

Well ive asked for a refund on the deposit but I guess they don't have to do they. It is quite cheap compared to alot of others I guess and probably because most of the history is missing.
Shall let you know what they say.

It's a dealer motoringcentre in Leamington Spa

It looks like you have already made up your mind and are just looking for support to help you justify the purchase.

I would only buy a car with bad history in 1 or 2 circumstances.
1) It's fookin cheap, I want the car and I'm happy to take the risk
2) There is only one for sale at the moment as it's a rare care... AND I'm happy to accept the risks.

Ultimately, do what you want (it's your money) but make sure you get a 6month warranty at least! Even 'small' problems can quickly start adding up when you start thinking about garage labour fees.

Yeah well hes offering the standard 3 months, won't give a refund as he said if he done it all the time then people would just keep doing it which I agree to a point I suppose. He's found another service receipt for 2012 so it's just 11 and 13 that's missing. I do understand about checking pads and stuff but to be fair some people don't know what they are looking at. My misses can't even change the windscreen washer and wouldn't know what a pad was lol but she always looks after the car and gets it serviced on time. I rang seat at Northampton and have confirmed the mileage upto 52000 and was confirmed they did 5 services on it but unfortunately can't confirm if the cambelt has been done, he said its irrelevant anyway as it should have had another by now but I thought it was every 4 years or 60k. How much is the cambelt? The cars been mot'd again.
Do you think 4995 as cheap? Can't find hardly any on autotrader and any others Ive seen have been very expensive. It drove spot on to be fair.Dsg box felt fine. If the belt went and wrecked the engine would the garage have to cover the cost of that?

I've asked him to get in touch with the Last owner to see if she knows anymore. I do appreciate the advice and I guess in some ways I am trying to justify it but surely the condition of the car now plays a part in the decision aswell. If a car hasn't been looked after by the last owner then I understand but the last owner on this has obviously spent some cash getting it back to a good state regardless of the owners before that. The cambelt is a worry I admit but My vxr hasn't had the timing chains done and thats on an 08 plate with 84k. Was probably pushing it with that but it doesn't mean I haven't looked after it.
That has fsh and I've had nothing but issues since I bought it, eml light randomly on, ids light doing the same and the suspension dropped on one side, to this day it's still not right.
Cars are a gamble I suppose, I bought a 1.6 Megane on an x plate for 1450 quid and I've still got it now, most reliable car ive ever had lol
If the warranty is extended to 6 months then I suppose it would cover it that little bit longer.
I plan on getting it checked over my a specialist anyway once I get it (if).

Implying people go cold on his cars often? His argument doesn't make sense to me as a dealer should be confident that if the car they are selling is correct, the deal will complete with a happy punter.
Why would more people want their deposits back or one person getting theirs back encourage others? Surely most people want the car!

he said its irrelevant anyway as it should have had another by now but I thought it was every 4 years or 60k. How much is the cambelt? The cars been mot'd again.

Who said it was irrelevant? The Seat dealer or the guy selling it? Guess its not relevant to either of them, but it sure as hell is relevant to you!! Unless there is a invoice for a cambelt, or the mileage is less than the recommended interval, I would have to assume it hasn't been done.

Yes it does seem cheap. My understanding is that cambelts are 'fine' until they are not 'fine' - and that's when it gets expensive for you. Very doubtful it would be covered under the warranty you are getting, otherwise I expect the seller would be more concerned about it too. You will be the one picking up the recovery and repair bill, plus the inconvenience factor and the bad taste in your mouth.

Well is there any way to check the cambelt itself to see if it's been done?
The seat service guy at the first dealer said it's irrelevant as it should have been done twice on 86k. Is that right?
Thing is my timing chain in tge vxr is overdue and just to replace that you are looking at 3k from a dealer but I know someone in vxronline who rebuilds engines and doe it for half that but even still it's 1500 quid just to replace it without it wrecking the engine.
Whatsthe cost on a seat for the belt?

Ok so spoke to a vw garage who did a service on it in june 2012 and it was on 70k. It had gone in in on 2011 to have the dsg transmission reset to factory settings and she remembers the guy who owned it, worked at a prison but he took it elsewhere to get it serviced as they couldn't fit it in but she doesn't know where.
