Hi everyone,

Recently joined researching MQB exhaust options in Europe, found lots of great information and nice cars! Thanks for the discussion and ideas.

I drive a Mk7.5 (facelift) 1.8T Golf Sportwagen 4Motion manual in California; wish the hot estates were sold here, but planning to make my own. Build goal is something along the lines of a Stage 2 Mk7.5 Golf R Estate/Cupra 300 ST R 4Drive, 350-380whp?

Current mods: 18" Neuspeed wheels, Conti DWS06 tires, MSS Fully Adjustable Sport springs, Golf R rear sway bar, TTRS clutch, BFI Stage 1 Engine/Trans mounts, Powerflex dogbone insert, Porsche Macan Brembo 4-pot brakes with 345mm rotors, S3 short shifter, various cosmetic improvements...

Upcoming mods: Milltek 76mm 200cell catted downpipe, IS20 hybrid turbo upgrade, ROW MPI retrofit/Precision Raceworks 450 LPFP, custom FlexFuel tune, axleback exhaust.

Cheers!

Hello and welcome! :)

That's an awesome project and a great build you have so far!

Where are you planning on getting your exhaust from? Are you limited to US suppliers or are you open to some of the UK/European suppliers too?

@Damo H has a beast of a Cupra ST (rare Carbon Edition) so he may be able to advise on the exhaust front.

He will probably say BCS Powervalve are the way to go - and from what I've heard and seen, it's hard to argue against it.

I've got a Remus going on my Cupra in the next month or so (managed to get a second hand one in a good deal). Scorpion are a great option too.

Get some pics up of your car when you get a moment :)

Sadly BCS don't do one for the 4drive :(

So anything but Miltek really as their build quality (these days) isn't great IMO, and the fitment on the the 4drive is well, how do I put it, well it doesn't fit (unless they've revised it since).

Thanks for the replies, fantastic builds Paddy & Damo!

I'm only really considering two axleback systems at this time: the Remus non-valved option for the Cupra 300 ST 4Drive (the valved system for the Golf R Estate is too rich for my blood), or the OEM rear mufflers from the Mk7.5 Golf R Estate, which are the same back boxes as the Cupra 300 ST 4Drive R/Carbon Edition. Either will fit the Sportwagen. Not interested in Milltek or others, or a res delete due to drone with the downpipe.

My major concern is sound/drone with an aftermarket downpipe fitted. This is my daily driver and the wife HATES loud exhaust tones. However, the NAR vehicles sound much more subdued than their ROW counterparts, in part due to lack of MPI and ECU differences that essentially prevent any burbles/overruns. In addition, I drive a 1.8T, which lacks the variable valve timing/lift of the 2.0T exhaust camshafts and runs a 60mm downpipe. The stock exhaust tone is completely nonexistent (and no Soundaktor fakery from the factory). I will be retrofitting the ROW MPI system to run a hybrid turbo, and am looking into upgrading my exhaust cam. Perhaps the custom tune and additional power will unleash some added character.

I love the tone of the Remus system, but would be equally pleased with something along the lines of the stock Mk7.5 Golf R Estate/300 ST R & Carbon editions. The latter being by far the cheapest and OEM+...

I'd say, get the down pipe first and see how it sounds. Then after that decide if you need to reduce the size of the back boxes. However if you are worried about drone, you're better off keeping the res and the back boxes as is and reducing what is inside them. The boxes will be sized to reduce the key frequencies of drone for the engine around 2.5k-3.5k that will increase with a down pipe.So keeping the boxes the same size but reducing the sound deadening in them will increase the volume but not the drone.

Someone on the Golf R forums did something clever with their estate, that I'd of done with my original resonator if the anti drone res delete hadn't of paid off. He put a tube inside his resonator, so he kept the volume of the resonator to reduce the vibration/drone, but improved the noise by ensuring the velocity of the gasses going through the exhuast weren't slowed down by the perforated pipe inside the res.

Hope that makes sense.

Great advice on fitting the downpipe first, that's the route I've been planning. I read this thread (posts #161 & 162) and am also considering this route vs. purchasing the Mk7.5 Golf R back boxes: https://forums.seatcupra.net/index....-with-mk7-5-golf-estate-exhaust.453316/page-9

The standard Cupra 300 ST back boxes are the same size and likely similar internally to the back boxes on my Sportwagen, with the single outlet pipe (engraved # is 5Q5 253 611 AK, vs AM on the Golf R/300 ST R/Carbon). Perhaps modifying them like Antero did in that thread would yield a similar result? Otherwise the R ST/Carbon boxes would be a slightly more aggressive sounding match as well. I wasn't able to find the thread on the Golf R forum illustrating the straight piped resonator modification, do you have a link?

Remus is the OEM manufacturer of VAG exhausts so it would seem their back boxes should be well matched. Not many complaints of drone that I've seen even with a downpipe.

Damo you have the standard 300 ST system now with res delete? How does it sound? Any plans for future exhaust modifications?

No I have the Carbon Edition, so it has the Golf R system with (at the moment) one off Anti Drone Vag Sport Res Delete.
