No Engine Cover

Hi There!

I am new to this forum so i apologise in advance if i screw up!

I need to point out that I am a new driver (32 years and finally decided to learn in 2014), as such i am no expert on cars... like at all. But this site comes highly recommended so i thought i'd join up!

Anyway, i purchased an 04 plate Toledo 1.9 SE TDi 110 on Friday and it drives lovely... but what i wanted to ask was that for some reason it appears to be missing its plastic engine cover on top. Is this vital? Is it needed? Should i worry at all?
