Opps.. dont need rods on bigger turbos? Think again.

This has happened to an ibiza which has come here for repairs... Been off road for 9 months so its not been a well ibiza. Broken clutch pedal, seized brakes from being stood for so long etc etc

Car has an IHI VF34 install... Runs 2bar boost! - stock engine... Not what you would be wanting on a bog stock engine with just DP and FMIC as supporting mods..

Engine has been making a ticky noise I was not comfortable with.
Before contemplating dialing the existing map down to sensible levels & running it on the dyno again I had to investigate the engine noise. I had a bad feeling...

Dropped sump and we saw this sat there.. :(

    power from this was 302bhp/285lbft.
runs a stock K03 silicon tip, with tiger sealed on hose over the top to get up to VF34's larger intake?
Inside the coupler is a small K03 TIP?

Knowing what I do from the the K04 big bore TIP I developed, I know this aint ever going to be adequately feeding an IHI VF34 with its 300+bhp potential..

So, its getting some rods now belatedly, a different intake as I cant be mapping this knowing its intake is only k03 TIP sized where it matters!

Still think sub 300lbft is Rod Safe?

Bulkhead also surprisingly cracked by the clutch master cylinder, possibly not helped by its previous very stiff clutch

Repaired by welding both side of the bulkhead (that aint fun!)

interesting but not suprised at all , speaking to jabbasport they would only recommend running 1.4 bar on ihi vf22 anything over that is asking for trouble on standard rods but aa larger vf34 thats just silly from owner to be honest also doesn't help with bodge job tip which no doubt was super restrictive for that turbo

Are the 20mm standard rods any stronger than the 19mm stock Rods.
Do you think that the 2 bar boost killed the rods due to excess cylinder pressures rather than say 285ft/lb achieved through 1.45 bar on a K04 or are we all taking the pi** a little.

whether the boost was by design or by faulty something I dont know.. If it was by design it was daft.
IHI's are not renowned for their liking of big boost... I have consumed several of these in early badgerwagen days with jabba.

The owner took it to be built by a reputable company, so he's hardly to blame.. he did'nt do anything to make it run that level of boost. He has had a big dose of bad luck tho. excessive cyl pressures bent it without doubt in my mind. It had coil packs expiring when first run, misfired and aborted the run, replaced and it ran clean, making the 2bar and power seen. It had a tick before and after... which was niggling me as to what it was. My fears were realised after seeing the rod and oil squirter sat in the sump.. :(

These cars are not new now and the engines have done many cycles above and beyond their design spec, eating into the factory margins

Those who still keep talking up their rods as being "safe" with sub 300bhp/300lb are imho, kidding themselves.. Luck is the factor here.. Roll of the dice....

I think a lot is to be said for the mapping though too Bill, Revo's reputable boost spike seems to be to blame quite often.

I still run N75, for road use it's fine. Track I would want something a little more versatile as it spins a lot in corners (probably due to stand diff though).

A MBC can help but the map is always going to be trying to reach it's requested level of boost and it will make the ride very spikey if you "turn down boost" with your MBC. Someone once told me "It's like having a 12 inch penis and trying to show the ladies it's ony 6 inches, not easy to hide"

It can run OK alongside an N75 but don't do it instead, would be my recommendation.

Why mention revo? No mention of it being a revo map thats caused this.

If the intake was this bad god knows how bad the map was.

    GHETTO.

Any bore damage bill? Any other damage because a lack of a squirter?

you cannot blame a specific brand of map alone.. Combination of factors can be at play here..

lots of boost all at once in one hand, poor running engine breathing heavily on its own fumes causing large timing pull and pinking.. on the other.. There is no one thing.
Spikey boost aint my cup of tea, so its not my choice on a std engine... fit some rods and want punchy delivery then yea, thats ok...

this car is'nt running revo on its ihi however... so not relevant here.
