thanks for your help

the oxford dealer gave me the part number 1J0 937 617C, the Kent dealer's wanted to know the battery amp power first - gave both of them my chassis number.

I have no idea what the amp power is? I think I need the
Fuse box:
1J0 937 555 cover for fuse holder
for models with battery: 44AH

I bought and fitted a Halfords battery last year:

Halfords Calcium Battery HCB063
Startup Power: 440 Amps
AH Value: 44
Reserve Capacity: 80
Bench Charge: 4.4 Amps
Weight (kg): 11.68

Sorry and many thanks again!

update: AC and fans still auto starting and not turning off, so definitely not the battery fuse box to blame.

Also with the new fuse box part, it takes a lot of strength to push in the fuse and pry it out, so this seems to be normal and does not indicate a fault. Time to start saving for another car, am not going to bother taking it to a garage for repair, I suspect a repair will be very pricey if they can find out what's wrong with it!

The melted fuse holder has probly ruined the connection between the fuse and the prongs it slots into! You can get away without changing the whole thing but you will need to disconect the wires that go to that fuse a rewire them into a seperate fuse holder...like what you see on a stereo amp power lead ;) that is the fan fuse though.
