Hi Everyone, im a bit of a stranger to the Mk3 section being an owner of a Mk4 130PD, however id just like to probe you on behalf of a friend.

Its a 1.8T Mk3 Cupra with REVO and a Milltek Cat-back and theres basically theres 3 syptoms of his car being ill:
  • When you leave the car idling for a minute or two, and then rev the engine (to 3000 rpm or so), there is a large plume of BLUE smoke coming out of the exhaust. It smells very petrolly however i would have thought blue smoke was Oil burning rather than black which is usually fuel.
  • The car sometimes (quite rarely) misfites under heavy load above 3000rpm
  • We've also heard a few backfires

We've run VAG COM on the car and it shows no errors. The boost seems spot on and the MAF was peaking at 147-148g/s iirc which seems about right.

The car has gone 61000 so has therefore recently had its 60k service, Cambelt, waterpump etc. So any idea what it could be?

  • A cylinder not firing correctly, pushing fuel into the cat, which builds up untill its revved?
  • Dodgy coil pack (lol i had to say it!) Are these under a 5 year warranty?
  • Oil overfill?
  • A dodgy seal on the engine perhaps?

Hope someone can help shed some light!

You checked all the basics, levels, leaks, right oil etc. seals, sounds like oil is hitting the wrong places etc or could be turbo :)

The next thing to check, would be the coil packs, but vag-com would tell you if its misfired though, which is wierd.

How long ago was the timing belt done? they dont something that could have caused this?

Cheers for the input guys. We checked the engine bay for leaks etc but couldnt find any. Foolishly we didnt check the oil, its the simplest things you miss! We'll check that tonight.

Will try to check the breather system etc, but nothing should be wrong with that really. Its only just come out of JBS 2 weeks ago after a major service, and they usually notice anything out of order. Its only happened in the last few weeks also

Is there any way to tell which of the others could be a problem? Im guessing theyre big jobs to get them open to have a look...

You wanna probe someone in the mk3 section?

Yes indeed! :p You were getting me worried about my use of English, but the Cambridge Cictionary says:

Probe
noun [C]
1. an attempt to discover information by asking a lot of questions
an FBI probe into corruption
a Justice Department probe into the Democrats' fund raising
