Been playing about with mine during the day, seeing if different positioning on the bumpers etc made any difference.

What I noticed was that if the tailgate remained closed for an hour or so, it always struggled to open the first time. After that, it opens everytime, no problem. It's almost as if the strut, having been compressed for an hour, has difficulty reaching maximum force. Once it's been extended once, the tailgate opens fully time after time.

Even when it doesn't fully open, it still opens a couple of inches, only needs a touch with one finger to help it on it's way. Still a lot better than the OEM struts.

I think the VW bumpers would sort that out

Not sure on that. The FL model has adjustable bumpers, some pre FL did as well. They are a different part number to the Scirocco but are very similar.

I would have thought as they are spring loaded they would give that first bit of momentum needed

I think the spring loaded part is just for the adjustment. The guide for the Golf (page 1) mentions locking them in position. If the bumpers are spring assisted, that may be enough to give the struts the start they need. The Leon bumpers have no spring, it's just the rubber compressing doing the pushing

**EDIT**

No, I think you're right, it does mention compressing it to assist with the initial opening.

TPS ( Trade Parts Specialists) are owned by VW. It's the franchise for the VAG parts network. Slightly cheaper than dealers.

I have also ordered some gas struts, however i ordered the ones for bootlid and spoiler as tim said it may need extra power! They will be delivered on Monday!

How do i fit them? Is it a quick and easy job?

Thanks :)

Right guys went to Stutsdirect today and had a word with the boss

He has said if you order via http://www.metrol.com/ on the phone then he will do the 515n sturts @ 12.72 + VAT

now this is the same company as struts direct
We fitted a set to Andys car and mate a slight change to make them fit better part number you need to give it NS-FF-8-200 515N B3SA B3SA

Now these seem to work great but sometimes doesn't open but then again we haven't fitted any other parts so thinking getting the bumpers should sort this out

Irfan.
I went to strutsdirect today as well. I bought the 550F and fitted then when I got home. Took less than 10 mins and didn't even need to use VCDS. My only complaint is that you need to use a lot of force o close the boot.

They should loosen up a bit after some use is your car a facelift or not ?

the ones we got made up have the same force as the 550F just with slightly different joints to make fitting a little easier
