Power Steering Gurus??

Sup guys,

So, picture the scene. Other half moves the car on Sunday, 10 yards, and reverses into a parking space opposite our house.

I get in the car in the morning and the Power Steering light is on and I have no PS, at all. Dead.

I read the codes with VCDS and cleared some, just to see what came back, but the obvious ones showing are listed as:

As you can see, some issues. I suspect the Kombi dash message is because I have a nice orange steering wheel fault light on the dash.

This feels like a lack of voltage. General consensus is to check the battery and fuses. Fuses are fine (the large metal ones across the battery and the 7.5a in the footwell, and the battery starts the car 1st time on the dime with no issues so, although not tested, I'm reluctant to think it's the battery especially as there are no other symptoms.

Also of note, some errors I cleared but I suspect have since come back were that the rear window heater element had gone open circuit and my top level brake light seems to have stopped working (although I think that has been dead for a while). Also, no visible signs of fluid loss anywhere.

So what are my next steps? Double check the fluid (bumper off?)
New pump?
New Steering Rack?

At a bit of a loss now without taking stuff apart.

lack power steering fluid or bad steering rack doesn't cause errors, although they could damage the pump in the long run, but you should feel effects on the steering before it fails completly.

looks like the power steering pump is gone.


how old is your battery?

The battery is old (probably at least 5 years) but as I say, I would have expected other symptoms like poor crank or intermittent PS issues.

I am tempter to grab a used (known) pump once I can confirm the part number. I assume bumper off and swap (I read alot about water ingress to the connectors or possible shorts in the loom down there). Also, this car doesn't have ESP so I think I need a nonESP pump, or at least swap the blanks and code it out.

if you are able to code the pump then you can put one with ESP.

short in the loom would not be usual.

Yeah that's what I mean, I can use an ESP pump and code it out (but I won't end up with ESP) is what I mean

the pump is exacly the same for both, the only thing that changes is the coding.

if the vcds that you have allows you to change coding you are fine getting an ESP pump.

and one has an extra connector where the other is blanked off I think

It has 3 but the 3th comes with a removable conector to seal against water ingress.
Ok, I've ordered a recon unit 6R0423156C. I had the bumper off today to confirm the part number I had (I had 6R0423156B). Is it easier to fit with the bumper off or do I need to remove the battery and battery tray for easier access?

Only way to remove is though the bumber or "wheel cover" like in the video below where they are replacing the whole steering system.

Its easier though the bumper because the connector in the middle usually is not easy to remove it.

And you dont wanna break it as it will cause water ingress in the pump.

156C is a review of 156B. Its ok.

Thanks dude, appreciate the help.

Moving forward, what do I want it to be coded to (as I can't see what it is at the moment by VCDS).

I don't have ESP, but reading around the steering sensitivity, I'd love a bit more weight in the speed but super easy in traffic and parking.

Lastly, how do you actually remove those plug connectors? They always seem to snap on me because brittle or I'm not doing it right :D

When you go to the steering module, you have there an option to Coding - 07

then you put a number there, and that number is done like this:

1 - With Airbag
12 - ESP / 01 - Without ESP
11 - light (normal) / 21 - more weight (fr??)/ 31 - even more weight (cupra)/ 41 - even more weight / 51 - the lighter of all (its for audi a1)

To remove the connector it is intuitive.
Just push the part in the middle up and remove it.

The one in the middle has an aditional red clamp that need to be in the upper position.also it is harder to remove because sometimes it is tighter.

Thanks, I see mention of an 81 steering setting which some say is more sporty (in the other thread).

I'm guessing as you say 10111 is the setting for me. That's coded though the steering assist module I assume?

Out of interest, how do you know the strip fuses are OK? when my ABS failed, I could not see the break, but DVM proved open circuit. When I replaced the link, it was indeed in two pieces, looks more like a stress fracture than electrical overload/melt.

Good point. Visually they are completely fine and I removed the board and nothing weird happened (like the cable stayed put). I'm really hoping the replacement pump works, otherwise it will be back to square one.

Out of interest, how did you replace the link, did you use the reserve channel?
