Hi

Another problem with my new Cupra R, the passenger side rear window won't go up or down.

There is power to the motor, using the switches you can hear a noise but no motion, you can see the window "want" to move when the switch is pressed, but it doesn't do more than move a tiny bit.

I can freely pull the window up and down by hand (had to pull it up by hand when it failed)

Been quoted 160 for a new regulator and 100ish to fit it by an independent VW / Audi / seat specialist.

This is a lot, and I'd like to have a go myself.

Do I just need to go on eBay, find one of the metal panels for the rear door that's certified working and swap it out? I am not great with mechanics, but I can do basic stuff - would this fall into that realm?

Cheers

Is a great start to fixing yourself and after the swear words and cuts hands you will feel good about the labor cost you just saved. Basic tools needed and many guide's about. Go scrap yard and take one off if you have one local to you, great way to learn before you mess with your own car.

So I took the metal plate off the door and I found a piece of white cylindrical plastic that appears to have snapped off.

Assume best thing is to get a new complete metal plate with all the parts attached and confirmed working and just swap out the whole unit?

The white circular part fits into a hole in the bottom of your rear window, it then gets “popped” into place in the bigger white triangular bracket. Plenty of videos online showing this.
Replacement triangular brackets can be had from auction site - I replaced one of mine with this and works perfectly

Hi

That's helpful, any chance you can point me to an eBay link of what I need and a relevant video?

I'm not useless with cars, but I need good guidance and I can usually figure it out. I'm excited that I might be able to fix this for a few pounds so any more info would be really cool

Cheers

Hi mate, if you type in “rear window regulator Golf mk 4” in eBay then it will let you see everything from the white bracket to the whole inner panel including workings.

If you search online for be “golf mk4 rear window regulator” then you’ll be able to find quite a few videos showing you how it all works and how to reattach the window to bracket

Just don't buy mk4 Golf/ Bora rear window regulator parts as they differ.
I've attempted to mix and match several broken regs from Leons and mk4s and its a no go.

The process of removal and replacement is the same but the cable lengths, rail lengths and thickness of the white plastic runner all differ.
