I did mine a copule of months back, took my about 45mins to get it off. I know Glynnd can offer good advice.

Theres 4 bolts holding the egr on and 2 vac lines, there is also then a metal pipe which runs below the egr valve to the exhaust cooler.

If memory serves me right each end of the pipe is held on by 2 allan key bolts. I found it easier to remove the pipe as this gives you access to the other 2 allan key bolts holding the egr on to the intake.

Be carfeul when removing this as there are 2 metal gaskets, here is a good place if you want to blank of the egr. I haev the pd150 engine as well so put a blanking plate in with a 5mm hole (glynnd) i get a n engine warning light after 50 miles or so but i just check the code and reset. Doing it this way i felt a definate improvement in throttle response and it stops the intake mixing with the crank case breather making that horrible sludge. See my other thread about seat leon tdi catch tank.

Think allan keys needsed were 5mm and 6mm, try to get one with a short shaft as theres not much room to manouvre.

Mine took 2 cans of carb cleaner and a toothbrush to sort out :)

Once the egr off is you can down into the intake manifold, i just cleaned mine a bit without removing some guys go the full length and remove the intake manifold. If you do leave it on you can clean it but make sure no solid lumps of cr*p fall down.

Def get some gloves as well

Hope this helps

isnt it easier to just blank off the vacum line with a bolt rather than making a blanking plate and stripping the egr valve down, if your still going to get a fault code.

No drilling a 5mm hole in the plate will stop the engine light coming on. Obviously some soot will still get through the hole but its cuts it down quite a lot and as said no engine light.

There are 3 bolts holding the egr to the inlet manifold. One of them is hidden, access blocked by an allen bolt which secures the connection pipe from the exhaust to the base of the egr. If you have large hands like I do then be prepared for some cuts, bruises and bad language! But on the whole faily staight forward to do. While you are there fit a blanking plate with a 5mm hole drilled in it.
Easy to make out of an old quality street lid. When you take the connection pipe off you will find a gasket between it and the egr or between the connection pipe and the exhaust depending on where you unbolt it. Draw around the gasket making the new one resemble the old but with a 5mm hole in the middle as opposed to the large on in the original. There should not be an engine light with a 5mm hole, mine never came on with a 5mm hole but it did when it had a 4mm hole!

Its a quality street tin lid, good for making a blanking plate from!
personally I would not bother with the race pipe, waste of money.

Race pipe all the way! Don't see the point in removing the EGR and putting a piece of tin in, soot is still going to get through and you'll be back to sqaure one!

Get the EGR replacement pipe and no longer worry about it :) - Perfect for those wanting to add a boost gauge to their TDI's too, looks very swish!!

JabbaSport are the people to talk to....about £50 for the part and another £20ish for labour and mapping the EGR software out.

Balls to EGR, just another part to fail and give problems further down the road IMO.

Fair enough comment Chris, its easy for me to dismiss the race pipe as after the jabba custom map, my egr operation is mapped out, plus its disconnected from the vacuum too.
