Replacing a Toledo

My well-loved 2001 TDI 110 Toledo is no more. Large van turned right across in front of me without warning and too close for me to even get on the brakes. Airbags have gone off and whole front end is crumpled, nearside front wheel arch is touching the wheel. No injuries to either side (seat belts WORK!) and witnesses, cops and insurance all say it's going to be his fault.

We liked the Toledo, which was bought six years ago as a low-mileage one-owner example, ex-Seat from the log book. It was nothing special, but it suited us. I'm looking to replace it with another, perhaps slightly newer, TDI 110 or 130, fsh and as low mileage as possible

The payout will not cover a replacement car, of course and I think I need to find 3.5-4.5K for what I want.

There are a few about but nearly all private sales or small dealers, not VAG specialist. The well-known issues I'd expect to be fixed on purchase I'd not really trust a small dealer to deal with, unless they had them done at a competent service center. Clogged inlet manifold and sticky turbo vanes, leading to limp mode, are the things I'd expect to find.

I know the 110 engine pretty well. What, if anything, should I look for in a TDI 130? I know it's PD and the 110 is not.

I'm inclined to get an RAC inspection done too. Any good/bad experiences with them?

I have some pics and may post when I feel up to it. Still pretty shaken up.

Personally I'd go for a 2-3k car and bank on the fact that the faults you know about will need to be rectified in the first twelve months of ownership. I'd also go private, dealers seem deluded on how much a Toledo is actually worth. 3.5k for a 2001 V5 was the best joke I'd heard, I got mine for more than two grand less!

At least you and yours are ok though, cars can be replaced.

Glad your ok Muttley. A PD130 would be a nice upgrade over the old 110, the increase in torque is definatetly noticable. As for what to look out for over the 110, well nothing really, they are both pretty rock solid lumps, you know the usual service history etc.

You know your TDI engines very well already so a PD lump is just an injection system change on it really, im sure you will find a good one, but the tollys are rarer to find.

It's very nice, and as you say all the known issues have been dealt with. I wonder what the insurance group would be, with remap and me being type 1 diabetic. I'll talk to the seller, though.

The one thing I'll add to this thread is don't bother with an RAC inspection. You'd do better looking over the car yourself. I had an RAC inspection AND warranty, but when the oil pressure sensor went on the journey back from the dealer, it was classed as 'wear and tear' and not covered. Say goodbye to £100 [:@]

Far as I can see, if you know your engines, then your better off taking a look yourself, fixing the faults you can, and then taking the remaining faults to a mechanic you trust. As Slimy said, allow the first 12 months to get the new car running sweet, and then usual checks is just about your only garuntee.

Glad you're okay though, and by the sounds of it, not unduly scarred by the crash. :)

Actually Oj, no physical damage but I'm only just getting over the shakes. The man turned right in front of me. No signals. Just enough time to begin to shout "NO!". I don't think my foot even got onto the brake pedal.

I will reiterate the point that the seat belts did exactly what they should. If I was not in the habit of always belting up, I'd be severely damaged right now. This was a local journey, no more than a couple of miles. Make it a habit to belt up, guys, and tell your passengers too. There's no journey too short to ignore it.

Anyway, enough of that. Does anyone know what is the situation with the new MOT rules about a professionally decatted car? Would I have to get hold of a swappable catalyst to install for MOT inspection, or worse, would I be obliged to refit a cat in case of roadside inspection? That would need the map adjusting too, I think.

Fester, you are a bad, bad man. Going to see the Toledo in the pistonheads ad. It will come down to whether the insurance is affordable for such a breathed-upon car.

Insurance shouldnt be any worse for you being T1 - i'm T1 and it's a long time since i got crucified for insurance because of it.

When the truck came to take it away, they started it and it ran up the road to a better spot for the truck to park. So, still just driveable. They make them tough.

I was too late. Instead of a viewing date, the guy replied to say it had been sold. I'll have to be quicker off the mark next time.

Found another TDI 150 Sport. This one's standard apart from the v5 half-leather seats. Fingers crossed that it's as good as the pictures I've seen and that nobody else gets there first.

If it does come good, I'll be headed back into the kind of performance I had with my Mk.1 Golf GTi all those years ago. A silly-grin car :)

This is all Uncle Fester's fault. I'd have settled for a TDI 130 until he showed me that the 150's were within reach. :D

Got a couple of candidates. Going to view them in the next few days.

Yes, diesel Toledo. Toledo II is a nicer shape, better aerodynamics, stiffer and lighter than the Leon I (which was derived from the Toledo). Looking for low mileage, fsh.
