Has anyone else got a letter recently regarding the twin mass flywheel on the 2.0 tdi Altea? :(

Quote: The flywheel may become damaged due to the configuration of the through flow limiter in the hydralic pressure line for the clutch. This can lead to failure of the twin mass flywheel and in unfavourable conditions may cause fire in the vehicle:wtf:

It also states it takes 1 hour to do the check and a further 5 to change the flywheel. By the sound of it my local dealer is preparing to do the exchange cos they will only book me in when they have the necessary kit from Seat.

No I haven't.

I got a Altea 2.0 TDI DSG built in October 2004.

I didn't get the other recall notice over the fuel pump either.

"The flywheel may become damaged due to the configuration of the through flow limiter in the hydralic pressure line for the clutch."

You got the magic word "clutch" being DSG mine could be different....

Hi everyone,

over in germany we're having the "exchange program" for the twin mass flywheel (TMF) running for almost 4 months now ...
... and there are still slight problems with sparepart delivery, where lot's of affected cars were ordered to the dealers to get the flywheel checked ... and when the diagnose stated it was one of the defective LUK TMFs they were waiting for the exchange part for several weeks.

Affected might be identno.-ranges of all modelyears (04-06) of the ALTEA/TOLEDO 5P 2.0TDI with manual 6 speeds with the (probably) defective TMF from the manufacturer LUK ... there are as well TMFs from SACHS fitted, which are not in scope.

Hope not too many of you are really concerned by this recall.

cheers ... Klaus

btw: for search in german forum use "Zweimassenschwungrad"/"ZMS".

Got two recall notices in the post today. One for the fuel pump which I have been meaning to get checked out myself since buying the car in July of last year, and a 2nd for the flywheel.

My letter reads as though it only affects 6spd manual cars and it is said that it will take an hour to inspect or 5 if a replacement is necessary.

I am currently waiting for my dealer to return my call to book it in.

Yay:funk: not the sachs units [B)] we only have the best products at work [B)] . Still, im surprised that they use LUK kits on the VAG range as SACHS are OE on them. We have only ever had 1 defective DMF come through work. Apparently the failure rate on the sachs DMF is 12 parts for every million or something like that.

Don't know but my letter talks of replacing the flywheel which isn't a small job. If they can do it in 5-hours I'll be suprised.

What is the normal protocol for recall's? If a fault is found and work has to be done, is the dealer under an obligation to provide a courtesy car to the customer?

Mine went in to be looked at today and yes it has to go in for a replacement:cry:

The garage rekon at 5 hours labour as the engine and gearbox will need to part company glad Seat are paying.

Just hope she goes back together without rattles or any other issues.

Will report back once done the Wednesday after Easter.

Sorry to hear it. Mine getting checked in a few weeks. I dont like the sound of having the gearbox and engine separated either. As you say it opens up other problems if it isnt put back together properly.

Managed to avoid the fuel pump recall so hopefully will sidestep this one too!

OH YES - been meaning to ask all you Altea owners with the same engine and gearbox as me a question.......

Have you ever noticed steam gushing out of the bottom of the car underneath the drivers door? I parked up one extremely wet day and got out of the car and there was a massive load of steam coming out from under the drivers door  Was thinking maybe the exhaust runs along here and I had just hit a big puddle? It looked like it was on fire! :( Its only ever done this once in 14 months but its weird all the same. Will ask SEAT about it when its in in a few weeks.

Errr no, but it sounds interesting. I think I'm qualified to speak that I do have the TDI 2.0 but with the DSG.

I use to get puffs of steam when I got back in my old ZX from the front, you would see it as you parked up on cold nights, but it had a leaking radiator having been bashed once in a parked car shunt and the insurance people considered that a bent leaking radiator was A OK...... it use to fall out of it's clips on one side and I'd clip it back in...... LOL. The annoying thing was that it was a new radiator about six weeks old before the shunt.

I did hear an interesting sound mind you the other day just after I had started up driven 100 yards, turned round and was heading back down the road and it sounded very mechanical for about three seconds as if the gear box was slipping... DSG ?. May be the oil was still stiff ?. Hasn't done it again.

I took mine in for both the fuel pump bolt and the flywheel on Monday. Fortunately no replacement needed.

Checked with service centre today, mine is on the recall list although i have not had letter yet. Going in for check next week. :(
5 hours seems to be Seat's very conservative estimate, the garage reckon they would need it for two days if it is one of the affected ones.
The Best bit is that although they do the visual check to confirm manufacturer first, they do not know if it is actually the defective item until they have stripped it out at which point they may find it is ok!:censored:
