I have a 1.9 ..57 altea diesel today had slight clunk underneath and could smell gear oil..stopped shortly after and confirm dripping gear oil drove it 3hours later cold and after a couple of miles as I was slowing to a junction it locked up and stalled. So put in reverse and got motion then it went through the gears ok but noisey with occasional clunk ,,any idea's

I'd probably check the gearbox oil level before I attempted to drive it any further.

It differs on model, but generally like the first 1:30 of this video where he basically just shoves his finger in it to check the level after removing the sump plug. Just be careful that you undo the gearbox sump plug (usually mounted on the side) and not the engine sump plug (usually mounted on the bottom of the sump pointed down).
