Good to hear that it works and thanks Klawit, I'll print it out so if I sell this car on to my brother in a number of years time he'll be able to service it, himself and not have the spanner. Yeah I was sure it did calander date as well and you confirmed.

My service spanner came on way before 10K miles.. I did the math and it looked very much like the service interval was based on 10k KM not 10k Miles.. I suspect the serivce calcs were not changed for UK cars.. I guess the service interval is 10k KM in mainland Europe.. Which begs the question, is stretching it to 10k miles gonna effect the longevity of the engine??

As someone who clocks 25k miles a year and keeps a car for a min 150K miles it's a question I'd like an answer to..

10k miles is quite frequent compared to the same engine in say , a Skoda where they have extended service intervals up to 20k. I don't think 10k is infrequent with modern engines and lubricants.
I wouldn't worry myself, if its any comfort.

here in Germany (as in the rest of western Europe) the interval is set to 15.000km or 1 year ... whatever comes first.

Like posted before (#17) the reason why your spanner came up long before 10.000 miles were reached could have been the ending time period. If the last service was approx. 50 weeks ago, the indicator starts flashing.

My service spanner came on 1500 miles before I reached 9,300 ish miles which is when it read zero.. (time for a service) but as I do 25,000 miles a year it was well before a year.. In fact the service spanner has been on for it's second service which it's telling me should be at 18,500 miles?? I'll hit this next week at which point the car will be 10 months old..

Most of my driving is motorway so my first service was "fluids" only.. It looks like were getting shorter service intervals here in the UK!!

i just used the method you posted for resetting the service indicator. I have just hit 50,200klm mark on my car - plan on running to 52,000 before getting it serviced.

Hi all - new to this forum

Found this thread and would add that I have spent some time reviewing the service on the XL. The service books now all come with service intervals listed in km's and the owners manual is also only km. Seat UK (customer service) do not want to get involved and refer you to Seat Spain. I have e-mailed them and asked why UK service books are in km - when our unit of measurement is miles. So far over one month later still no reply. (Great customer service!)

Anyway, 15,000km relates to 9,320 miles and this should be the service interval not 10,000 miles. Certainly the service indicator on my XL came up for 9,320 miles.

that's slightly worrying as the dealers tell you 10000 miles, anyone out there who could totally clarify the situation ??. Interestingly i did the reset as per earlier posts and my 'spanner' hasn't come on yet and i'm about 9500 mile travelled since last service, though i suppose there was a gap between the service and me doing the reset ! though i thought the onboard electronic wizardry monitored things and told you when you actually needed a service ??, if it's just a mileage counter then why does it differ ?

My service counter came on with 1500miles to service interval and counted down to 0miles left. For service tomorrow, might ask in there and see what they can tell me on the service intervals etc.

When I bought my Altea 1.9TDi 3 months ago it was given a service prior to me picking it up, after 2 months the 'service spanner' stared coming on along with the annoying 'bing', as I was planning on getting the cam belt changed I thought I'd get Seat to re-set it at the same time. Took it in yesterday and was told they weren't allowed to turn it off if they didn't do the service. Mentioned it to a work colleague who gave me a rough idea how to do it myself, did a google search and found this site! Cant believe I've not been on here before.

Anyway, the method stated on here worked for me, no more 'bing'

When I bought the car it came with locking roof bars attatched but no keys, took it to the same dealer thinking I could get a set of keys only to be told they weren't original Seat bars, despite each keyhole having a plastic cover with the Seat badge on. Took it to the local locksmith who had the bars off within 5 mins and a set of keys within another 5.
I've since seen the same bars on ebay listed as original Seat bars, would seem that if they're not extracting large sums of money off us they really dont want to know!

1) Push ODO trip in
2) Turn ignition on
3) Turn ODO trip to right

Doesn't matter how long I hold the stalk to the right, it never flashes up with reset to zero, I've held it there for upto 2 minutes and it never says anything. The spanner vanishes immediately, but no message.

Every 1000 or 2000 miles later, the spanner keeps coming on, it's doing my head in!

Any ideas what's causing this, 2004 model.

You need to have it reset by someone with VCDS. I had the same problem with my Altea. It would reset fine every time, and then a few days later it would pop back up again. What had happened was that the data on the ECU had been altered at some point and when resetting it was going to the settings the ECU held which were wrong.

Once I reset it with VCDS it corrected the data held by the ECU and reset to the correct time and distance.

If yours is a Vagcom lead then I don't think it works on Canbus cars. You need VCDS.

Er, whatever it's called!

It's the HEX+CAN lead I've got and it definitely works with the Altea, I've just not had my hands on it in months because someone borrowed it.

The software etc. ceased to be called VagCom back about 6 years ago (predominantly due to a threatened court case from VAG) and is now called VCDS (Vag Com Diagnostics System I think). Although Vagcom is the name people use generically, that particular program is no longer in use and doesn't cover canbus cars anyway. What you have is VCDS.
