Sorry to say but more than likely yes, time for an engine rebuild well top half at least I would say.

£900+ I would say, best case would be new cylinder head and valves, new chain and tensioner new gaskets etc.

Possibly new pistons aswell if they have been damaged when making contact with the valves.

You may have been very lucky thou in that no damage has been caused, if this was the case all you would need is a new chain kit and the timing reset.

The garage should be able to tell you more, when they investigate further

Thank you. If it is damaged which would be best a new engine or a rebuild

Rebuild would be cheaper, brand new engine would be more than the car worth. Recon engine would be no difference to having yours rebuilt.

Engine out of a scrap car would be cheapest option but you would have no idea of how that engine had been looked after in its lifetime

Is it not possible that the chain suggestion is wrong and it has suffered piston damage, same sort of money, but it seems if a piston is now damaged, you will be replacing all 4 pistons as VW Group and maybe others have stopped supplying the original design of pistons, new ones are heavier so all 4 need replacing, so that engine will now be a better engine once you have rebuilt it.

There are other routes you can down but all depends on what you plan on doing with the car in the future.

I have known a few people have an engine rebuilt after cam chain/belt failure and they all say the engine was never the same again and constantly give them small niggling problems in the future.

Make sure who ever does the rebuild knows what they are doing. There are specialist companies out there who specialize in engines that have had belt failures.
