Hello - I have a 99 plate ibiza gti 8v, and for 3 years I have had relatively no problems...until now.

About 4 weeks ago the revs would drop on idle causing the car to stall, mainly at junctions , roundabouts etc. This lead to the first trip to the garage where my throttle body was cleaned out..This helped for a couple of days with the engine running sweet. However , the car stalled on start up (it was warm) and it cut out... stopped ...kaputt.. the engine would turn but wouldnt fire. tryed bump and jump starts no joy.. just turning and no fire. Then I smelt fire! A quick check in the engine bay confirmed burnt coil pack (grrr) so I source one and changed it no probs. The car then started after a bit of a groan and roared into life.. all good ? not quite... the car now randomly starts well or with a splutter (like the starter is struggling) on the splutter start up my dash clock resets to zero ??? a quick check at my local garage showed battery is fine and no alternator probs... just said maybe tuning???
Everytime the car struggles to start, the clock resets telling me there is an electronic short somewhere?? Does anybody have any tips.... any help would be great...thanks in advance

I'd start looking at the main power and earth cables I've known them to corrode and brake strands off the copper cable not sure how or why your coil pack Cought on fire. Not seen that one before

Yeah mate all down the right hand side of the coil pack was melting dropping molten plastic everywhere..... no good!
Bit annoyed with the garage as they not wanting to help , as I sourced and fitted my coil pack myself.. (its a new dealer part btw) could the timing need adjusting, or tuning...???

Don't blame them, old cars can be a nightmate

In my experience the most common issues with these is coil pack, fuel pump / ecu relay and air flow meter

If you are near Hereford i can plug it into VAGcom

Mate thanks for that , im 4 hours away so ill have to pass on the vagcom... thanks anyway:rofl:
