My seat arosa 1.4stdi, 53 plate, is causing me worries! It broke down the other day and the problem has not been fixed.
When accelorating, sometimes the car looses power (doesn't cut out, just looses power). When the ignition is turned off and back on again, the car is fine. However when I did this the last time, it did not start.
One garage changed the fuel filter and air filter, it started OK but still did not have the usual power.
I was advised by RAC man to change a relay which I did which made it fine for about 3 days, then went back to loosing power.
Next garage I took it to, said that there was nothing wrong with it. Cearly there is, PLEASE HELP!

Assuming it is a fuel supply issue you would need to check:

Fuel pump
Injectors

Starting with the fuel filter and fuel pump relays makes sense, but then at this time of year withe the cold weather you have to hope the diesel hasn't got cold / waxy and frozen, and that you haven't got any air /water in the system if they have changed your filter.

It's difficult to say without seeing them whether they are both similarly related problems.

I seem to remember the 1.4 TDi Sport was the PD engine (75bhp), so I it may be worth doing a search on here for any known issues with the PD (Pumpe Duse) diesel system.

I would avoid main dealers for out of warranty cars, particularly in the current climate.

Search out a good independent SEAT/VW/Audi specialist in your area who will be able to diagnose your fault rather that reading for fault codes which only tell a part of the story.

my car has a petrol engine not a diesel, another person said it may be to do with the brake lights, and that it may need a new switch...

Amy,

What was the large three digit number on the relay you changed? Was it the fuel pump relay (Probably numbered '167') or one of the others?

It sounds like the common limp mode, you need to find out what code/codes are stored, it could be a boost leak, vacuum leak, sticky turbo vanes, dodgy N75 solonoid etc. You need to find out if it's under boosting or over boosting, don't let it freak you out, it's not usually that big a problem. Here's a good limp mode faq, it's a different engine but still the same sort of set up and still a vag, the same stuff applies.:)

Yeah my Cupra was doing this for a bit. jerky on the gas peddle and occasional loss of power. Turned out to be a dirty/ loose earth connection! Easy fix! (phew!)

If the relay you had changed was the fuel pump relay (167) - not unreasonable under the circumstances - then you could now try changing the ECU relay (numbered '109') as this is a notorious cause of strange intermittent running/starting problems. The price for this part from VW dealers is only about £16, so it's a pretty cheap thing to try and you don't lose much if it doesn't fix your problem. The currently sold version of the 109 relay is also better designed than the original one, so it's not a bad idea to fit the new version even if your original one hasn't started to go faulty yet.

It's also one of the first items mentioned in the page Seatmann's post links to. (Good info, Seatmann)

Hello all, I have recently bought a Ford Focus 1.6 after all the trouble I had with my Seat Arosa, it turned out to be a problem with the Computer. Then my car got written off by another driver! My focus seems to have the same problem. I changed the ignition coil and all seems to be well.
