Guys,

My cupra has been in for an MOT today and failed due to one of the boots being split. They quoted me £180 to fix?!?! The part is only about £15 but they said that to get to the boot theyd need to take off the cat and part of the exhaust and take the whole steering column off?

Is this correct? Or is it a job that I could do myself in an hour or so?

Any advise would be appreciated!

Cheers

I got to mine from the side on my Cordy tdi, just mark the position of the track rod end and then unscrew it off, slip or cut the old boot off then slip the new one on, just check there's enough room to get your hands in or at least your fingers so you can get a cable tie on it. You might get access from below to pull the cable tie tight.:)

im sure they must be trying to pull your plonker. as above i havent looked at my cupra but for one the cat is underneath not on the downpipe so wouldnt be in the way. the steering column is inside the car so again not in the way.

i do them at work takes about 20 mins tops on most cars. undo track rod end (count the turns off this will help you to put it on in the right place). Cut the old one off. slide the new one down the track rod. fix it on either using tie raps or the proper metal clips. then wind the track rod end back on same number of turns.

get the tracking checked but it should be perfect allbeit that it was perfect before if done correctly
