That will be ASV, which is the code for a 110 bhp non-PD engine, just like mine. EGS is the gearbox code.

You may be looking at a build sheet sticker, one of which will also be in the boot under the carpet. Lots of codes. The interpretation of them, as far as I can make out, goes like this:

____________________________________________________________
Here is a summary of the info I have on build sheet interpretation. The 3-character option codes are common across all VAG vehicles and the spreadsheet summarising them is nearly a gigabyte in size. There was a short list, for codes relevant to Octavia's, published on the Briskoda forum.

The build sheet is under the carpet in the boot. It will look something like this; (taken from my build sheet, with serial numbers anonymised)

Code:
G123 24-5 697289 EG       I don't know what this signifies.
VSS ZZZ 1M Z 2B123456 VIN code; Chassis number 2B123456
1M28 24 1M2824 is the complete model code
TOLEDO TDI 8 SIGNA Model designation for 1M2824 in MY02
81 MNO       C5M          81 = engine power in KW
ASV EGS Engine code and Gearbox code
LS5N ---- ---- KU Paint No and interior code

S5N is Imperial Blue, by the way.

After this you get a series of 3-character Option codes which indicate what options were installed at the factory.

The VIN code breaks down like this;
Code:
VSS ZZZ 1M Z 2B012345
||| ||| || | ||||||||
||| ||| || | ||++++++-Production sequence number (i.e. chassis number)
||| ||| || | |+-------Manufacturing plant (B Brussels, Belgium)
||| ||| || | +--------Model Year - 2 2002
||| ||| || +----------Check digit - Z, filler
||| ||| |+------------Engine
||| ||| +-------------Body Style
||| +++---------------Vehicle Attributes - ZZZ, filler
+++-------------------Origin: V Europe,VS Spain, VSS SEAT
Of course the build sheet only tells you the condition of the car when it was delivered.

The ASV engine is a non-PD engine, with a variable-vane turbocharger, the main difference between it and the original TDI 90. You should have a red I in the TDI logo.

PD engines have a red D as well. The PD engine in the Toledo of that year is a 150 bhp unit, coded ARL. Later cars could have the ASZ, 130 bhp PD engine also.

they "work" but are quite a crude way of fooling the engine. a proper re-map would be much better,but then you get what you pay for.

edit:sorry for the mix up of engine code,was thinking out loud so to speak. ;)

thanks again. On another note just recently i've had a problem where the turbo appears not to be working. When you switch the engine off/on problem disappears. Have read on these forums about it being the maf or the turbo itself sticking. However i changed the air filter (last changed 20 000 miles ago) and it has not happened again (so far). Also topped oil up to maximum ( was in the safe zone anyway). Do you think the air filter could have caused this or is that wishful thinking. Car has been getting oil changed every 10k miles and has only done 79k.

re previous post turbo went off again. Switched engine off/on and works again. Took car for 10 mile drive and really gunned it in evey gear, turbo never failed once. Really strange. Booked car in this afternoon at local vag specialist for diagnostic check to see what problem is. Been told could be anything from solenoid to needing new turbo. If its new turbo will be totally p*ssed off as drive the car reasonably well and has always been serviced every 10k miles. Is this a week point in vag tdi's? Never heard of renaults or fords doing this?

had the diagnostic check done and have been told its the vanes that are sticking. Going to try and get a hold of innotec cleaner and give it atry. Garage will charge 2 hours labour for this if i supply the stuff. Can it be bought in any shops and if not do they sell to trade only?
