Had issues with my 1.9 TDI underboosting, overboosting and generally being a pain in the ass for a while. Symptoms were going into limp mode up and down hill under hard acceleration, I'd tried Revive Turbo Cleaner, Valvoline Turbo cleaner and Mr Muscle so thought my turbo must be clean and got started playing with the sensors.

All the sensors checked out so I got on to a local VW specialist who suggested replacing the turbo for £550, which I didn't want to spend without knowing for sure it was the cause, or using the Forte Turbo Cleaner as they have had positive results.

Popped it in half a tank of fuel not expecting to get anywhere and initially I thought that was the case, 100 miles in and the car was still hitting limp mode. Decided at this point to manually operate the turbo actuator a bit and the limp modes got less, another 100 miles and another wiggle of the actuator which was noticeably smoother, another 100 miles and NO limp modes and more actuator wiggling which is now perfect!

I'm amased that something that went through the combustion process was able to do this, but my car really is driving the best it ever has!

So if you're having limp mode issues, then for the sake of a tenner off Ebay or £15 on Amazon its definitely worth a go!

I bet that it was the manipulation of the actuator that did the trick rather than the Forte.

Mine had the same symptoms and used the foaming oven cleaner method but after leaving it in soak for 20 minutes kept coaxing the actuator everry 10 minutes after a fresh top-up of cleaner, an hour later and it was working smoothly.

It may be a coincidence but I think it was probably a combination of the two as foaming oven cleaner and manipulating the actuator only lasted a couple of months before more problems.

All I know is that for two days I have been driving the car with a huge grin as its going the best it ever has.

I'll report back if starts having issues again.

My dad recommended the Turbo cleaner, glad to hear it works! My dad has a lot more experience with cars than me but is the actuator easy to get to, to manipulate it?

Thanks alot!

Is this still working well? Might have to get some ordered. I tried using the oven cleaner but it took me all morning to get the egr off. And then I could reach the bottom bolts of the egr recirc pipe. Mines different to everyone Haynes manual even though my engine code is ARL. Any advice?

Yeah its still going well at the moment, found that not using supermarket (tesco) diesel is a big help too! If you remove the flexible air intake pipe that goes between the airbox and solid intake pipe you should be able to get at the other end of the EGR pipe. Its mounted on the exhaust manifold. Be a good idea to get a blanking kit off of ebay too if you can to stop all the soot getting back in to the intake which is what I did.

I notice you're in Chesterfield so if you need a hand I can come and see if its the same as mine.

Yeah I agree I only use shell
V power. There's a guy in Sheffield that sells egr delete pipes. I imagine they come with one blanking plate for the manifold end.

Are you local then? It would be some help just to explain in person. I'm pretty cleaned up on everything tbh its just the fact I've not done it before

Yeah if I was putting the delete egr pipe in I wouldn't need the blanking plate for the egr. Wait... Your car silver and you hang around skate park?

Yeah you could do it like that I guess, I binned the pipe and blanked both ends.

Hahaha bit old for skate parks at 31! My TDI is a bruised and abused red Toledo TDI.

I mean I'm going to remove the EGR it's self. So only need to blank manifold off I probably didn't explain it very well.

Aha just checking... There's a guy in clay cross with a silver leon, mine is also a silver leon and people keep getting me mistaken for that dude. Sounds like he's being pissing people off as I keep getting the abuse from it all. He was spotted everyday last week at Chesterfield skate park that's why I asked, yet again people thought it was me.

Thing to consider with removing the EGR is that you also remove the anti-shudder valve which also prevents engine runaway incase of turbo failure.

It doesnt happen often but it can, basically when the turbo oil seals give way it fills the intake and the engine essentially runs on its own oil until it runs out and siezes due to lack of lubrication. With the anti shudder valve if this happens you just switch off the ignition and it closes the intake cutting the fue/air supply to the engine stalling it out. If you search for 'diesel engine runaway' you'll probably find something.

Yeah can certainly help with the oven cleaner trick and showing you where to feed it in.

I also have a white Ibiza Cupra and a couple of years ago there was a right tool throwing another one about in the area, always used to dirty looks with people thinking I was him!

Yeah I know about them. But il risk it cos there's no problem with just stopping immediately put it in third and let clutch out.

Awesome, have to organise one day we both free then.

Oh dear people getting is in the crap aha
