The Great Overheating Poll - 2005!

if it woz the head gasket, you wouldnt have any coolant left in the tank, it would have evapourated, check the lid of your oil cap, is there any mayonaise type stuff in the lid?

if so this is a sign of coolant getting into the oil, and could possibly damage big ends in the long run.

More than likely sounds like waterpump. common fault

Well folks, the motor has been at Awesome GTI today and they have made it better. I can't believe that non of you smart alecs managed to spot the problem. It was a failed water pump impeller. Not one of you mentioned that as a possibility did you ? :bleh:

I bow to your superior knowledge :worship: and a significant credit card bill :thumbd: :censored:

All mods on hold!

flucking hell , i hope this isnt the same thing as on my car :(
I Just had to do two short trips to and from work, roughly about 2 miles round trip, stopped the car in the town and temp was fine, went to drive out of town after about 600 yards and the light starts flashing and the temp is near the top!! , pulled over instantly and turned the engine off with the fans going mental, im only 200 yards from home so i thought well ill just go all the way home and leave it overnight, lets hope its ok tomorrow :(

Doesn't quite sound the same as the problem I had. Overheating only happened at consistently high (ish) revs - i.e. on the open road, not in the town. However, if the water pump impeller has completely smashed off, then it may be. Hopefully its not the pump issue, for the sake of your bank account! Good luck!

OK, warranty runs out next month and this thread is giving me the jitters!

My car's water pump has not failed yet but by the sounds of what has been said - it is an impending thing :censored:

A possible omen of things to come - my boot lock has just stopped unlocking!

Will the extended warranty cover the water pump?

Here is a different stance - I HOPE my pump fails in the next 2 weeks ;)

I can't believe that VAG have not sorted this, I had this problem on my 97 passat cost a fortune to sort. Surely VAG should be fitting a better pump by now.
On my car the fans would kick in but took ages and the car would still overheat, if you openned the water tank (be careful it fooking hot) you would get loads of bubbles and the tank would overflow, proberbly from the pressure built up inside the engine.

Hi Mick

This is an old thread but the overheating in my case was caused by a faulty water pump which could circulate enough water at slow speeds but could cope with motorway cruising.
